Halloween Makeup Essentials to Make Scary Sexy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Start ditching your cat ears and devil tails, Collegiettes, because this Halloween, costume staple items are out. What’s in? Pairing your favorite LBD with a different kind of costume ensemble: an artistically crafted BOO-tiful face.

This Halloween, scary is sexy, and whether you’re revamping the classic animal look or going for a dark and tragic goddess, your above-the-neck transformation will cost your makeup bag a few crucial additions. From dark stains to shimmery shadows, these makeup essentials will make any skull spook and shine.

Face

·      Brows, Brows, Brows

A sharp, defined brow can make any costume theatrical. Work up your brows with darker shades to exaggerate the effect. (Costume tip: Use a crisp brow if dressing up as a witch or vampire.)

·      White Foundation

In case you haven’t caught on yet, a white painted face is crucial to making a Halloween-inspired face frightening. Go with a white foundation, as opposed to globbing sticky paint all over your face, and top it off with white loose powder. Don’t forget to continue blending down your neck to further dramatize the pallid, ghostly look.

Eyes

·      Fake Eye-Lashes

Dramatize your fairy, witch, or creepy-doll costume by sticking on a pair of fake lashes as a glamorous finishing touch. You can pick up a pair at any local drugstore, or at Spirit Halloween on Route 80.

·      Cream Shadows

Whether you’re dressing as a ghost, clown, or festival vampire, cream eye shadows are the key to your creation. Use the shadows as face paint and apply with different sized brushes to on and around your eyelids. The creamy substance applies to skin smoothly and does not itch or rub off. Check out ULTA in Selinsgrove to find a full cream shadow palette with an array of colors and you’ll be able to reuse this purchase for future themed events.

Lips

·      Matte Lip-tint

A bold pigmented lip on top of a pasty face is the spookiest and sexiest way to draw attention to the edges of your mouth. Choose a black or apple-red tint for the most rousing effect. Lipsticks work just as well. Tints, however, will keep your daring color lasting the whole night, even after a spine-chilling Halloween kiss.

Add-Ons

·      Glitter

I think Halloween is the only other holiday besides Welcome Night where it’s socially acceptable to turn yourself into a human disco ball, no matter the outfit.

Spray it on, pour it over your head- don’t hold back, it’s your night to shine!

·      Fake Blood

What’s a fun and gory costume without some fake blood? Embrace your inner vampire or zombie and drip the blood from the corners of your lips, spilling down your neck. Spirit Halloween sells fake blood in squirt bottles, which makes the mess minimum but the realistic blood effect to the max.

No matter what you’re going as, these makeup essentials will help dress up your favorite LBD without the help of any headpiece accessories.

What's up Collegiettes! I am so excited to be one half of the Campus Correspondent team for Bucknell's chapter of Her Campus along with the lovely Julia Shapiro.  I am currently a senior at Bucknell studying Creative Writing and Sociology.
