Awkward Girls’ Guide to Surviving Bucknell

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Everyone has awkward encounters from time to time, especially at a small school like Bucknell. Coming from experience, here are some realistic tips to provide a less anxious and cringe-worthy day for girls who live every second of their lives as a “that awkward moment when…”.

1. Seeing a hook up the morning after on the quad:

How to handle: If possible, take a different pathway to avoid it all together. If it’s too late for that, look down and get your phone out. If you’re feeling confident and want to say hi, do not. You’ll end up screaming hi from too far away and painfully walking the rest of the way towards them, eventually murmuring “what’s up” just late enough for them to already be past you.

2. Deciding whether or not to hold the door open for someone:

How to handle: Quickly make the choice with #noregrets because there is a fine line between the courtesy zone and forcing a person to sprint shuffle towards you. A good rule of thumb is to always push the door open after you walk in and whatever you do, don’t look back.

3. Seeing acquaintances… or anyone for that matter… around campus:

How to handle: Put on your resting bitch face that we all know you have and walk purposefully – no one will want to say hi! Never walk around during peak hours, such as 8 minutes before the hour. Oh, and make the 2nd floor of the library your second home.

4. Getting food from the Bison:

How to handle: Whatever you do, do not go during peak times when it is filled with everyone and their brother or sister…literally. When the Bison worker throws you off with a question you were not prepared for, such as “just a regular wrap?” or “enjoy!” just leave the food there and walk out… that’s better than responding “um yes, I mean no, wait yes” or “you too!” Go order Sushihanna and by that I mean get your roommate to place the order for you because you are not equipped for a phone conversation.

5. Seeing crush at the gym:

How to handle: You’re approaching your 3rd mile and your crush walks by. You can’t breathe already so why not crank it up to speed 10. You’ll look really cool until you lose control and drop your phone… then you’ll definitely get his attention. Also, chose your stretch spot wisely unless you want to make direct eye contact with him mid stretch, legs spread.

6. Dancing in public:

How to handle: We, as a species of awkward human beings, tend to lack the ability to dance, and end up looking like Taylor Swift. Follow her advice and “shake it off.” I’m sure some guy will think its cute…

Most importantly, with anything dealing with social interactions, just don’t leave your dorm room! Just kidding… but seriously, awkward defines you, and I mean that in the best way possible. Over the years, I’ve learned that you just need to embrace it and be yourself. From one awkward girl to another: good luck out there!
