How to Dress Like Michelle Obama

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Even though the Presidential campaign came to a close last month with the re-election of President Obama, there was another indirect win as a result of this re-election- more fabulous FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) fashion from Michelle Obama! For all of us fashion lovers, it was certainly a win knowing that we would get to see another four years of fabulous fashion from Michelle Obama. So, in honor of our stylish first lady, I present to you five FLOTUS fashion tips:

1. Don’t be afraid of COLOR

Yes color can be an intimidating, but when done right, it has an amazing impact! Michelle effortlessly works the bright red hue in a practicable way – a classic and simple sleeveless sheath dress.

You can bring the same color to your closet in small doses. This belted pencil skirt is a great option to wear to work with a plain white shirt and black flats.

2. Incorporate PRINTS into your wardrobe

Prints can sometimes be difficult to weave into your daily wardrobe, especially because some prints can definitely border on childish. However, as Michelle shows us, a print can bring whimsy to basic look.

A floral print is classic and is an easy way to bring prints into your outfits. This dress with tights, a blazer, and boots would work for class or even out to lunch with friends.

3. A BELT can bring a whole outfit together

Accessories do help round out an outfit, and Michelle’s most beloved accessory of choice is definitely a belt. This accessory does double duty; it brings character and style to the look while defining your waist to give shape.

Belts are great especially with dresses and skirts. Add this belt to a red dress for the holidays to add some architectural and textural detail!

4. RECYCLING your clothes yields great new outfits.

Let’s get real; being in college means we have to reuse pieces in new ways for different occasions. This is when our creative skills and accessories come into play as the FLOTUS demonstrates.

Any piece in your wardrobe can be recycled for a new look, just add different layers, accessories, and shoes to a dress like this striped dress for two different looks. Look 1 is designed to wear to class while look 2 is for a nice dinner out.

5. It’s ok to BE BOLD

With this brightly colored and big printed dress, the FLOTUS rocks her fierce fashion chops! Although you may find such bold choices to be difficult to handle on a regular basis, incorporate bold colors into your look once in a while to show off your personality and style.

If you are nervous about wearing something too bold, it is always easy to pick a single bold piece and then tone down the rest of the look. This top, paired with dark skinny jeans and a coordinating cardigan, would make a cute but polished look.
