A Single Girl’s Guide To Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Binghamton chapter.
  1. Scout out fellow single girlfriends:  Rally up your squad- not Taylor Swift’s. Hit the movies, the bowling alley or some restaurants… anything but the books. Put the reading assignments down for the night and just enjoy your ability to have a great time without the presence of any man.

  2. Buy LOTS of snacks:  Eat whatever YOU want, whenever YOU want it. Maybe even hang out with the guys that love your thighs- Ben & Jerry’s.

  3. Chocolate Boyfriend:  Who needs a real boyfriend when you can have a chocolate one? (And yes, it tastes as good as it sounds.) https://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Man-Solid-Milk-Chocolate/dp/B00B2S4OQA

  4. Movie Night:  If you’re like most college girls.. Liam Hemsworth, Ryan Gosling and Leonardo Dicaprio depict our “ideal” man. Pick your favorite celebrity and binge watch all of their movies from breakfast to dinner. After all, Ryan Gosling will always be much better than any boyfriend will ever be.

  5. Embrace your college diet:  It’s time that you accept the fact that in college all you eat is microwavable Mac & Cheese and Ramen Noodles. Luckily, Perpetual Kid has allowed you to “one up” that college diet with the Savory Ramen Chocolate Bar. https://www.perpetualkid.com/savory-ramen-chocolate-bar.html .

  6. Dorm Room Spa Day:  Invite some friends over for those weird face masks that make you look like you’re favorite animal. Enjoy some appetizers along with good friends and company. In an addition make “Single Awareness Day” a reality by advising everyone to wear their best black colored clothes.

  7. Get away from reality with an adventure:  This could be as simple or complex as you want it to be. Head into the Nature Preserve for a nice and relaxing scenic route away from all the romance. Enjoy being able to do something YOU want to do and no one else (even if it means buying those Insomnia Cookies, AND even the ice cream, your diet has been telling you not to have).

  8. Get dressed to impress:  Buy yourself a nice dress and go get some fancy dinner with your girlfriends- you dont need a man to take you to dinner.

  9. Order yourself some White Cheesecake M&M’s:  Or any flavor for that matter. https://www.walmart.com/ip/M-M-S-M-m-White-Chocolate-Cheesecake-8oz/197799554?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227067477244&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=172571985080&wl4=pla-276883632662&wl5=9060351&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=197799554&wl13=&veh=sem

  10. Create the ultimate Valentine’s Day playlist:  Compile songs like “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper, “Firework” by Katy Perry and “Wannabe” by Spice Girls to create the ultimate female empowering playlist.

  11. Treat Yourself:  Use the money you would have to use on a significant other for Valentine’s Day and spend it on something you have always wanted.

  12. Turn to Netflix:  Netflix makes everything better. Test those new “Netflix Original Series”, like Orange Is The New Black and A Series of Unfortunate Events, that you haven’t had the time to watch (don’t forget the popcorn).

  13. Grow A Boyfriend:  Again, who needs a real boyfriend when you can grow the perfect man? Best thing about this is you get to name him whatever you want… perhaps Stewart? https://www.amazon.com/Grow-a-Boyfriend-Novelty-Item/dp/B005MGNSE2?th=1

  14. Tell the people you love in your life how much you care about them. Valentine’s Day is a day of love, not just romance- Take time out on Valentine’s Day to write a heartfelt note to your parents and grandparents.

But remember ladies, plenty of men are single and affected by this holiday. After questioning many boys on campus about their “go to” way at surviving Valentine’s Day, I discovered their ways are highly similar to the way us single ladies celebrate. They eat chocolate but specifically Valentine’s Day hershey kisses. While some boys do homework, others claim that “every year is the worst year for [them]”. Many say that their dates usually cancels on them and so they end up just hanging out with single guy friends instead. While hanging out they talk about “guy gossip” and “girls of interest”. Some say that they spend their Valentine’s Day helping out their “homies” with their love interests. One said that “One year had to get flowers for a girl who’s boyfriend went to another college.” So, in conclusion, us single people gotta stick together (and hopefully start dating each other too, that’d be nice).
