What to Wear While Working Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

BC students usually spend a large amount of time thinking about their daily fashion choices, but they don’t realize that picking out a great workout outfit can be fashionable, too. Whether heading to the Plex, going on a run, or attending dance practice, it is important to be comfortable and ready to sweat while still feeling good about how you look. The key is to know your body – mix and match the bottoms and tops to create an outfit that feels and looks great on you. Here are some tips to help you find that perfect workout outfit!

Bottoms

DO WEAR: Although the weather is getting colder, the Plex is constantly hot. To accommodate its warmth, throw on a pair of sport shorts, such as mesh running shorts. These are great because your legs are bare, yet you are comfortably covered without anything extra being exposed. The mesh material allows the shorts to dry faster. If you don’t like shorts, try capri length leggings or yoga pants. A stretchy material, such as nylon, is your best bet; besides having more mobility, nylon doesn’t become quite as baggy as cotton does, and it will give you a better shape.

DON’T WEAR: Try to avoid full-length yoga pants or sweat pants – these will be too hot to work out in and if your pants are too long, they can easily get caught on the workout machines.  On the other hand, short booty shorts might be inappropriate for everyone to see at the Plex.

Tops

DO WEAR: Try a cute, sporty tank with a built in bra that is specifically made for the gym. A lot of sports tanks are colorful and designed for different types of body shapes. Plus, the built in bra will give you extra support. If you prefer something not as tight, loose racer back tanks and pinnies are very comfortable and light. Or, take advantage of those free unisex t-shirts! You probably have a lot of them from various BC events or even high school. They’re on the looser end as well, and you definitely won’t mind sweating in them.

DON’T WEAR: Avoid regular spaghetti straps or anything low cut – you’ll be fixing your top throughout your workout and won’t be very comfortable. Since the Plex is very warm, you might get too hot in a long sleeve shirt.  Also, stay away from regular bras when working out. They are uncomfortable, won’t provide you with enough support, and the straps will most likely keep slipping.

Hair

DO: Hair is pretty easy – get it out of your face, so it’s not in your way! Some great hairstyles are a ponytail, a ponytail with the hair braided, or a bun. Use workout headbands to keep the extra wisps out of your way and to add a splash of color to your outfit.

DON’T: This is pretty simple – don’t wear your hair down. It will most definitely be in your way and will make you even sweatier.

Mix and Match

Try mixing up different styles of tops and bottoms, as seen in Pictures A, B, and C. Avoid wearing either all loose clothing (because that can look a bit sloppy) or all tight clothing (because that might be uncomfortable). For instance, if you’re going for capri leggings or yoga pants, try a looser top (Picture A). For looser running shorts, a fitted workout tank looks great (Picture B). If your running shorts are a bit tighter, but still appropriate, put on that pinnie with a black sports bra underneath (Picture C).

Keep in mind what kind of workout you’re doing. For example, shorts would work best for a high energy Zumba class, but might not be as comfortable on the spinning bikes. Tanks are great for running on the treadmill, but not as much for a Pilates class during which your bare, sweaty shoulders touch the mats.

Miscellaneous Tips

Don’t be scared to use bold colors, as long as you wear them in moderation – they will make your outfit pop and you’ll automatically be in a happy mood. Avoid wearing excessive make up since it’ll run down your face as soon as you start sweating. If it is cold outside, you can still wear shorts, just slip a pair of sweatpants over them that you can remove once you get to the Plex.

Some of our favorite workout brands include Lululemon, Under Armour, Adidas, and Nike.  However, those stores are pricey. Therefore, try TJ Maxx and Marshall’s for some cheaper options – they still have the same great styles, and they often carry the popular brands as well.

In the end, one question remains – why does it even matter what you wear to a workout? Just as it is in everyday life, if you are confident with your workout outfit, you’ll be more motivated to work out and feel great about yourself. Know your body, try different options, and have an awesome workout!
