Do You Dare Switch to iOS7?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

The buzz generated by the new iOS7 update was enough to dominate Twitter and conversation in general for a few days.  Now that the initial hype and hysteria has died down, lets examine if updating was actually for the better.

And those of you who haven’t yet updated… you have a serious decision to make.

Update!

With all of your technology updated don’t you feel a little trendy?

New features are great:

·      Control Center: There’s now a swipe up function at the bottom of your phone that stores popular utilities, like airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, do not disturb mode, orientation, brightness, volume, flashlight (one of the best parts in my opinion), timer, calculator, and photos.

·      Notification Center: The swipe down feature tells you if you have anything on your schedule today, and lists messages and calls, stocks, and updates from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram (ect).

·      Multitasking is easier. Now when you double click the home screen it pulls up each page and you can easily swipe though them to multitask. (To quit apps, you have to swipe up on each page while your using this feature)

·      The home screen is a huge plus, the time is displayed in large font and it looks really sleek.  You can also access the control center before you unlock your phone, so that’s great.

·      AirDrop is cool- it allows you to easily share things with other iPhone users

·      Safari is way better, with one search bar at the top for either a web address or a search term, and it’s much easier to organize your bookmarks and reading list… If your the type of person who uses reading list.

·      Photos are now organized into years, collections, and days.  All of these sections keep track of where the photo was taken as well.  Makes it much easier to find what you’re looking for. Also, now you can add filters to your photos!

·      Did you notice that the clock icon now is a working clock?

·      The update means you basically get a new phone so you can explore its new features all day long!

Don’t Update!

·      Beware: it’s possible that your phone could develop glitches from the new update.  I’ve been hearing some horror stories about iMessage.  If you share an Apple ID with a parent or sibling they may be receiving all of your texts after the update…

·      Described as “looking cheap”, and like it was “inspired from Nintendo,” the graphics are not exactly getting rave reviews.

·       iCal is different!  For those who store their whole life schedule on their phone, this may be a learning curve.

·      iMessage has changed too; now you can swipe each message to see the time each one was sent.  It’s even more difficult to sneakily ignore a text…

·      Traditionalist: Some people are just downright loyal. Plus once you get used to all the features of your phone it just seems like another project to download iOS7.

Hint: If you haven’t updated yet because you don’t have over an hour to download everything and figure it all out, try putting your iPhone in airplane mode and just connecting to Wi-Fi to download and update the software.  It goes by much quicker!
