5 Steps to Starting Over After a Breakup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Break ups are never easy. Maybe your relationship ended because of a fight, cheating, lying, or just a decision that things weren’t working. Regardless of the reason, we all know what’s next: You have to move on. Don’t get too intimidated, readers! I have found five steps to getting back on your feet after a break up. The relationship might be over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be happy!

1. A night of solitude

A break up can ruin any girl’s day. Because of this, I am giving you an entire night to feel sorry for yourself. Go ahead and soak it in. Listen to Taylor Swift’s “You’re Not Sorry” on repeat, buy a giant tub of cookie dough ice cream, cry on your best friend’s shoulder, and watch your favorite sappy movie. Don’t hold any emotion back; you’ve earned it. Now, when the next morning comes, the “feeling sorry for yourself” stage is over.  It’s a great day for a new beginning!

2. Bag it up!
First thing’s first; you need to get rid of anything that reminds you of the dreaded ex. Any jewelry, photographs, or souvenirs from romantic dates have to go. Yes, even the precious stuffed animals from Valentine’s Day should no longer have a spot in your room. I know it’s hard, but the sooner you can let go of these things, the sooner you can forget about him! You deserve to be happy, and holding on to items that make you think of the past is not a step in the right direction.

3. Get a fresh perspective!
Go volunteer with something that you’re passionate about. If you love animals, go visit The Humane Society. Want to feed the hungry? Go help out at your local soup kitchen.  Wherever your interest may be, you will always be able to find someone who is having a harder time than you are. Walking a mile in someone else’s shoes (or for animal lovers, paws) can really put things into perspective. A boy may be out of your life, but it’s never the end of the world!

4. Get a fresh look!
A new beginning means a new look. Spice up your style a little! If you’ve always had long hair, maybe you should try a short bob. Thought about dying your hair a different color but been too afraid to try? Now is the time to take a chance!

It can’t hurt to spoil yourself a little, either. If your budget allows, splurge on a new outfit to remind yourself of how gorgeous you are! Working with a college budget? No worries! Ask your roommate if you can look through her closet. In light of your recent heartache, I’m sure she will understand.
Also, if you set up an appointment at places like Sephora, Bare Minerals, or a makeup counter in the mall, they will gladly give you a FREE makeover!

5. Girls night!
This step is crucial. Round up your best friends, put on your favorite stiletto heels, and have a night on the town! Nothing can help you forget about a boy more than an evening of laughter, dancing, and making wonderful memories with your favorite girls. Whether it be jamming out at Legends, having a nice dinner at Makatos, or partying it up at Klondike, you’re bound to have a good time. Repeat as often as you need!

Always remember: Boys come and go, but great friends, a little bit of confidence, and an optimistic outlook are eternal.
