How to Transition your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Still feeling your strappy sandals and flowy dresses? Don’t put them in storage just yet! With just a few styling tricks you can conquer the awkward transition from summer to fall.

Tip #1: Tights, tights, tights!

This one might be a little obvious, but the easiest way to transition your summer dresses into the cooler months is to add a pair of opaque tights or thigh high stockings. However, one way to make it look intentional is to watch the colors you pair together. If you have a white or pastel dress, it may look better to wear a pair of gray or colored tights as opposed to black, which looks better with darker palettes.

Tip #2: Wear whites that have texture.

While we think banishing white after Labor Day is an outdated rule, there is something to be said about white looking a bit off at times when autumn hits. The best way to avoid looking out-of-season is to wear furry, knit, or textured whites. Try to avoid white linen pants and flimsy sundresses.

Tip #3: Layer.

The most put-together outfits have one thing in common: Layering! Whether you wear a sweater over a dress to make it look like a skirt, or pair a blouse with a cardigan, scarf, and jeans, you’re bound to be the envy of people on campus who rolled out of bed in sweats.

Tip #4: Rustic inspired items.

Lately, it has been pretty warm in Boone, which can be unfortunate for those of us wanting to break out our cute fall outfits. If it is still too hot for you to wear tights and sweaters, add some items to your look that look like fall such as worn in brown belts, chambray button ups, knitted accessories, or boots!

Tip #5: Change up your beauty routine.

Fall is a great time of year to try out some new hair styles or makeup trends. Your highlighted summer hair can clash against your outfits depending on the shade, so it might be the perfect time to go a shade darker or weave some orange or red ribbon through a braid. Break out that burgundy lipstick you’ve been dying to try.

With fall’s leaves changing and the whirlwind of a new year in full swing, be bold and change your look to match the beautiful season!
