Seventies Inspired Spring Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Let’s get right to it, this spring is all about heading back to the 1970s. Everything you automatically think of is on trend. From knee high lace-up sandals, to suede, fringe, and ultra short hemlines, the 70s are back and in full swing. If any part of this statement freaks you out, remember every trend is worn best in moderation. You also do not have to try all of these new (well, old actually) styles, stick with the ones that make you feel most comfortable and confident! So, no need to worry, you too can look like Farrah Fawcett in the original Charlie’s Angels.

Alright I’ll start with a low-risk style to warm you up to the idea of 70s fashion. Suede was a staple on the spring runways, in jackets, bags, shoes, and even skirts. An easy way to take part in this trend is a cropped suede jacket, fringe optional. Cropped jackets are totally spring-friendly and easy to style. The likes of Burberry Prorsum showed suede with white, so take a traditional tan suede jacket, structured white t-shirt, and white linen shorts and you’ve got it made. If you’re feeling funky you can pair that ensemble with gladiator sandals that lace all the way up to your knees, because oh yeah those are a thing and I’m loving it.

Next, lets talk about the wide-legged trouser. Denim or cotton, this elongating silhouette is always flattering. Wide leg pants typically have a high-waist and pair a pointy toe heel or flat, see the ethereal Etro line for further inspiration. These pants would go great with a cropped short sleeve t, I usually opt for white for pretty much anything, but this is not a hard and fast rule, although I’m thinking of making it one. You could also tuck a long-sleeve shirt into the pants and pair with a vest with lots of texture, whether that be fringe or fur.

Lastly, the bohemian trend has made its way back! What’s cool about the bohemian trend is there are many ways to work this look. You can play it simple and try a flowy white blouse. You could pair this top with an a-line skirt, or short shorts! The bohemian look also incorporates floral designs and texture; so don’t be afraid to experiment a little bit. Floral doesn’t have to remind you of your grandma’s drapes and it certainly does not have to be super girly. Skin is in this spring, so try a floral scarf or top with jean shorts to keep things simple on the bottom. Finish this look with chunky platform heals to really bring in the 70s vibe. If you are in the mood for a more relaxed look, you could also rock retro sneaks to balance out your floral top. As always ladies, remember fashion is about having fun and being yourself! So have fun! And yes, if the sun is out, you can wear shorts, looking at temperature is so last semester.
