You Know You’re a 90’s Kid When…

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

1. …you aspired to be Britney Spears.

It’s okay to admit it. Almost every girl born and raised in the 90’s wanted to be Britney Spears at some point. She was young, beautiful, and a mega superstar. Who wouldn’t want to be her? That is the past of course. If you tell anyone today that you aspire to be Britney, you will get a look of utter terror and confusion. But don’t worry, 90’s girls understand. Britney was the kind of girl all the little girls wanted to be. She was perfect in every way. You would listen to all her songs on your CD players and dance in your rooms while wearing sparkly dresses and blonde wigs. And fess up, you still play “Toxic,” “…Baby One More Time,” and “(You Drive Me) Crazy” every once in the while when you’re alone. They are classics.

2. …you were on your AOL profile just as much as you are on Facebook today.

AOL was the big thing in the 90’s. Kids would get home from school and immediately run to the computer and log into their AOL profiles. They would IM their friends until their moms called them upstairs for dinner. It was the time of thier lives. It was the new way to have fun and stay in touch with your friends all day long. Oh the days of instant messaging. Now there is texting, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. There are too many ways to stay connected. Some might say it’s excessive, others might not even notice. 90’s kids thought it was a big deal to be able to talk to someone and have them instantly respond to you without having to call their house phone and asking their mom if you can talk to them. Now, 21st century kids don’t even notice all the technology and means of communication they are capable of.

3. …you think ‘N Sync and the Backstreet Boys are hotter than One Direction.

How can you even compare, right? When you grow up listening to ‘N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, you simply can’t look at One Direction the way all the high schoolers and middle schoolers can today. How can you compare Harry Styles to Justin Timberlake? This is a very controversial topic in this day and age, but you know what’s right. No one can top N Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye” or the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way.” When you listen to those songs, you think of yourselves as kids with your N Sync lunchboxes jamming these songs on your cassette tapes in the car. Let’s face it, the 90’s had the best boy bands of all time. No question. Even popular TV show, Glee, knows it’s true.

4. …today’s Nickelodeon shows scare you.

What happened to the good old Nickelodeon that kids used to watch in the morning while they ate breakfast before school? If you look at it now, you will see shows like iCarly, True Jackson VP, Big Time Rush, and Fanboy and Chumchum. This is a scary list of shows. A group of friends make an online webcast that becomes super popular, a high school girl becomes vice-president of a clothing line, a group of boys make it big as a new boy band, and two random kids in costumes do weird things all day. What ever happened to All That? It was the perfect Saturday Night Live for kids, and a lot of the actors in that show made it big later on. How about The Amanda Show? Amanda Bynes used to be the funniest person ever because she dressed up as her biggest fan and stalked herself throughout the whole series. You can’t forget Kenan & Kel, Rugrats, Hey Arnold and Catdog! These were classics that used to keep kids entertained for an entire day until bedtime. How can today’s children be so deprived?

5. …a 2 year old baby can use an iPad better than you can.

It is quite scary when you see babies being pushed around in strollers with iPads in their hands. Yes, 90’s kids did have LeapFrog and that was a lot of fun for them. But nowadays, parents can buy apps on the iPad for their babies. There are learning games and kid games that keep them occupied for a good amount of time. These kids can type words, navigate from app to app, take pictures, and master Angry Birds like professionals. It is scary to think that kids as little as 2 years old can completely adapt to technology when it took you years just to learn how to turn on the computer. Makes you feel old, doesn’t it?
