KPU Presents: Tony Goldwyn from “Scandal”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

The POTUS himself has been announced as the Kennedy Political Union’s All-American Weekend speaker. Okay, so maybe it’s not President Barack Obama, but Tony Goldwyn is close enough, right? If the name Tony Goldwyn doesn’t ring a bell, you may know him by his on-screen name: President Fitzgerald Grant from the popular television show Scandal. Earlier today, KPU announced via email that the prominent actor will be speaking on October 22nd at 7:00 pm in Bender Arena.

Besides playing the President and Olivia Pope’s occasional beau, Goldwyn is also a producer, director, and political activist. He has had several different roles, from playing Carl Bruner in the 1990 film Ghost, to recording voice-overs for the Disney animated film Tarzan. As a director, Goldwyn has overseen several feature films and episodes of television series’ such as Dexter, Law & Order, Grey’s Anatomy, and Scandal. He also worked as the executive producer on the series The Divide, for which he aslo directed the pilot episode.

As an activist, Tony Goldwyn has been particularly vocal on the issue of arts advocacy. He was the former president of the non-profit organization, The Creative Coalition. Goldwyn is also a spokesperson for the AmeriCares Foundation, which works to aid in disaster relief and help find long-term health care for citizens all over the world.

So far, it is unclear what to expect from Goldwyn’s address. We are hoping he spills a few secrets about the next season of Scandal, and of course we can’t wait to hear what it is like working with such powerful women like Shonda Rhimes and Kerry Washington. With the recent publicity surrounding AU’s new American Studies course, “The Shonda Rhimes Experience”, we anticipate that Goldwyn will have a few comments in this area as well. Regardless of whether you are Team Fitz, Team Jake, or even a ‘Shondaland’ fan at all, be sure to come out to see Goldwyn on parent’s weekend, for free with your AU ID.
