6 DIY Halloween Costumes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Halloweekend is around the corner, and in college that means you need many costumes to get you through the week. Sure, you could recycle your costume, but what’s the fun in that? There are loads of different costumes that you can make with the items in yours and your friends closets.

1. Rosie the Riveter: You will run into at least one person in a Rosie costume every night, because it is such an easy costume! Wear a denim shirt, denim shorts or pants, and a red bandana wrapped around your hair to channel the great woman who set a standard for working women.

2. Where’s Waldo: This one is perfect if you already have a red striped top. Pair it with some black leggings and black glasses frames and you’re good to go.

3. Secretary: This is a classic Halloween costume and there’s no reason to spend money on it. A pencil skirt and a white button down is all you need. It can be as modest or as sexy as you need it to be. If you add a neck scarf, you can transform into a stewardess!

4. Bank Robber: If you have something black and white striped in your closet, it’s easy to be a bank robber! Whether it is a dress or a shirt, pair it with a black beanie and you’re ready.

5. Sandy: We all love grease and this is such a hot costume that is pretty easy to make. Shiny or leather black pants, a black tee and some red shoes. Don’t forget to curl your hair and tease it out like rebel Sandy!

6. Athlete: The easiest costume of the bunch. Either you or a friend already have an athletic costume, either from AU or from high school, or a favorite sports team jersey. Throw it on and you’re an athlete. These girls were creative and wore an American flag bathing suit and they were Olympic gymnasts!

If you need some more ideas, you can always be a vampire, animal, or witch with a black dress and accompanying accessories (fangs, ears, hat). Also, if you have a plaid skirt, go ahead and be a school girl. A cowgirl is also an easy costume to pull off (plaid shirt, shorts, and brown boots). You could even wrap a white sheet around you and be a Greek goddess (just add gold accessories!).

Last bit of advice, get creative! You could even make a blue scarf into a dress and go out as the ocean! Anything is possible.
