HCA’s Oscar Recap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Alabama chapter.

The Oscars are like my Super Bowl. Ever since I was a little girl I have been obsessed—from the clothes, to the jewels, to the speeches, to the movies. I cried like a baby when Halle Barry won her Oscar, and at the time I didn’t fully grasp the importance of her win. So when Sunday rolled around I was thrilled. I have a tradition that I always have an excellent dinner while watching the show, make a fabulous dessert and drink a wonderfully rich cocktail. (Back in the days before college, when it was me and my Daddy on O.S., it was a mocktail of course!) This year was no different. Except I gave up liquor and sweets for Lent, so I had a glass of wine, mashed potatoes, corn and a filet mignon. Ballot in hand I turned on E! News for it’s three hour carpet extravaganza. This is where the disappointments started. I won’t even get into my ballot, which was my worst in history with a final score of 8-15. (For those unfamiliar with the “ballot game”, it’s simple: download the list of all nominees and then select winners for each category.) Guess this year I really was in denial about The Artist. But let’s get to the fun stuff: the fashion and a little gossip!

What the heck was Giuliana Rancic wearing? The epaulettes/feather sleeves on that gown hurt my eyes. I’ve never been a huge Giuliana fan, simply because I cannot seem to grasp why exactly she’s famous and a style expert, but that gown with that make up looked atrocious. Then there was the Seacrest incident heard ’round the world. Frankly, I think he deserved it because, again, I can’t understand why he’s E!’s go-to guy when it comes to celebs, and it was really, really funny. Finally, the time had come to switch to ABC. I’ve always preferred ABC’s carpet coverage because they get the interviews you actually want to see, the funny moments that are staged but bring a smile to your lips. Boy, did my girl Robin Roberts not let me down. First there was Gwyneth Paltrow, who can do no wrong in my eyes. Classically stunning, I loved the cape aspect of her Tom Ford gown. Her interview had me giggling into my glass, best friends with Drew Barrymore? Love it.

Then there was Sandra Bullock. Okay I’ll be honest about the Marchesa. I didn’t love it. Again, those epaulettes killed me. But I liked the two tone, and more importantly I love her. Who on this Earth can talk about making “sexy times” at the Oscars sound so adorable and funny? Sandy can.

So, who were my top three best dressed?
1. Penelope Cruz, I’m dying. Truly wonderful in Armani Prive, this color looked sensational on you. But then again, when does a color look bad on Penelope? The draping made her look like she was walking on a cloud. I loved the curls pinned up and back in a faux bob, it complimented the earrings perfectly.

2. Milla Jovovich, I still am fuzzy on who you are, but that single sleeve beaded Ellie Saab was stunning. Girl, you brought back old Hollywood glam, and I adored it. The curls and deep red lips completed your look to perfection.

3. Alabama native (and War Eagle shouting) Octavia Spencer. She had me tearing up in her speech, and that Tadashi Shoji gown looked amazing on her. Way to pick a figure flattering show stopper! She hasn’t had a misstep this award season and I think she made an excellent choice pairing up with Tadashi Shoji. He has dressed her impeccably, and this is no exception.

What did y’all think of my list? Who am I forgetting? Who was your best dressed? What was the one moment of the 84th Academy Awards (carpet or show) that had you dying? Tell us on Facebook or Twitter, we love to hear from y’all!
