Mike Russell

University of Maryland, Class of 2011
Hometown: Hawley Pennsylvania
Major: History

HC: What made you join ROTC?

MR: Prior to ROTC, I spent four years in the Pennsylvania National Guard, which included a deployment to Iraq. During that time, I truly just fell in love with the military, and realized I enjoyed leading troops.

HC: Describe a day in the life of someone in ROTC.

MR: It really does depend on the day. We have PT [Physical Training] three times a week at 0630. PT can range from cardiovascular endurance, a ruck march, weight lifting, swimming or upper body exercises. We meet for an Army class once a week and then an Army lab once a week as well. On top of the responsibilities that are placed on us from our ROTC Battalion we also have our typical schoolwork to deal with as well.

HC: What is your favorite thing about ROTC?

MR: The camaraderie. Here you meet other individuals who are like you. We’re typical college students, but at the same time we have a desire to serve our country and eventually lead soldiers.

HC: What is your dream job?

MR: An Infantry Officer in the United States Army

HC: What is your ideal date?

MR: I’m dating the perfect girlfriend. I don’t really have a dream date. I just enjoy spending time with her. Whether we’re at the movies, going on a date night, cooking dinner or just hanging out, I’m happy with it.

HC: What are three words that the people who know you best would use to describe you?

MR: Reliable, caring and physically fit. I asked three different friends to pick one and that’s what I got.

HC: Fill in the blank: I couldn’t live without:

MR: Chicken wings.

HC: What is your favorite vacation spot?

MR: Over winter break, I did a cruise with six of my friends. We went to Belize, Honduras, Cozumel and the Cayman Islands. It’s hard for me to pick one over the other, but they’re all beautiful.

HC: What do you like to do in your spare time?

MR: In my spare time I’m usually either reading a book, in the weight room, or playing some NCAA on [Xbox] 360.

HC: What is your favorite movie?

MR: Rocky IV, but followed up closely by Kung Fu Panda.

HC: What kind of music do you listen to?

MR: I really listen to everything. If I was to turn on my iPod you’d see an assortment of Frank Sinatra, Jay Sean, Taylor Swift and Akon. I don’t really listen to just one particular style.

HC: Describe a typical Saturday night for you.

MR: I live with seven other guys who do ROTC. I usually just spend my weekends hanging out with them or my girlfriend. I’m more of a homebody. I’m 25 – I’m kind of over the whole going out thing.

HC: What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

MR: Well I wasn’t always 25, but no comment :)

Josh Foote

Harvard University, Class of 2010
Hometown: Murfreesboro, TN
Major: Philosophy

HC: What made you join ROTC?

JF: I have a family Navy lineage dating back to at least the Civil War, and I’ve wanted to be a sailor since I was five. ROTC was a great way to do achieve that goal and attend Harvard for free!

HC: Describe a day in the life of someone in ROTC.

JF: For the most part, I have a normal college life. I’m a varsity lightweight rower, so I have practice every day in addition to class. ROTC gives me added commitments, though, that other students don’t have. I’m at MIT by 7a.m. between two and five days a week for workouts or Naval Science classes, and I spend Wednesday afternoons there working on leadership and professional development. The biggest difference is that while my classmates spend the summer working internships in investment banks, I spend mine at sea aboard a destroyer or frigate.

HC: What is your favorite thing about ROTC?

JF: My favorite thing is that it gets me where I want to be. The end result of ROTC is receiving my commission and becoming a naval officer.

HC: What is your dream job?

JF: My intention at this point is to attend law school after four or five years, so I guess my dream job is to be a wildly successful trial attorney, either in criminal or corporate litigation.

HC: What is your ideal date?

JF: Anywhere with my girlfriend, Mackenzie!

HC: What are three words that the people who know you best would use to describe you?

JF: Chivalrous, opinionated, Southern

HC: Fill in the blank: I couldn’t live without…

JF: Oxygen

HC: What is your favorite vacation spot?

JF: Hawaii

HC: What do you like to do in your spare time?

JF: What spare time?

HC: What is your favorite movie?

JF: Currently, Master and Commander

HC: What kind of music do you listen to?

JF: I like most kinds of music, but my favorite by far is country.

HC: Describe a typical Saturday night for you.

JF: Drinks in my dorm room starting somewhere between 7 and 9 p.m.; either out to the Harvard Sigma Chi house around 10:15 or invite friends over for a smaller get-together; general rowdiness ensues for several hours, with good times had by all until around 2:30; sometimes we end the night discussing life, love, and/or philosophy on top of the front of the library.

HC: What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

JF: Piloted a T-6 (used to train fighter pilots), an SH-60 helicopter, and crawled all the way to the forward end of a torpedo tube on a fast-attack submarine, all in the same week.

HC: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?

JF: [I think] the greatest danger to this country is people following our leaders, on both sides of the political spectrum, without thinking for themselves first.

Daniel Berry

Syracuse University, Class of 2011
Hometown: East Lansdowne, PA
Major: Public Health Major

HC: What made you join ROTC?

DB: I decided to join ROTC at Syracuse because, ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to have some involvement in the Army but didn’t know how to go about doing so. When I got to school, I met some members already in ROTC. They told me all about it, and then I just decided to go for it.

HC: Describe a day in the life of someone in ROTC.

DB: A day in the life of a ROTC cadet usually starts about 5:30 a.m. when they get ready for Physical Training (PT). That lasts until 7:30 when people will go about their day of classes, work and other activities. Friday usually starts about 6 a.m. for meetings followed by class at 8 a.m. followed by a 2 – 4 p.m. lab where all sorts training goes on. We’ll learn everything from land navigation to battle drill tactics to shooting.

HC: What is your favorite thing about ROTC?

DB: My favorite thing about ROTC is the military experience I’ve been offered and also the people I’ve met. It’s been a great experience thus far.

HC: What is your dream job?

DB: My dream job would be as a member of the special forces of the Army. At least a job that doesn’t require 9-5, a desk or a tie.

HC: What is your idea date?

DB: My ideal date would be on a beach late at night on a warm summer night with my girlfriend and a cold bottle of Jack Daniels.

HC: What are three words that the people who know you best would use to describe you?

DB: Out-going, determined, motivated

HC: What is your favorite vacation spot?
