7 Gay Guys We REALLY Wish Were Straight

There’s some truth to the famous saying that all of the best guys are either taken or gay; and when it comes to checking them out, I feel the same way I do about beautiful, overpriced handbags: there’s no harm in looking…

Jonathan Groff
I dare you to see Jonathan in Spring Awakening and not have your own Groff-induced awakening. Even a quick YouTube search of Jonathan playing opposite Lea Michele will do.

Lance Bass
He’s no Justin Timberlake, but Lance was a member of a boy band in the 90s which automatically earns him a spot on our list! We faced collective disappointment when Lance bravely came out and destroyed our fifth grade fantasy of marrying all of the members of ‘N Sync in one beautiful, beach ceremony (I mean…what?).

Nate Berkus
Oprah reference, anyone? On the off chance you didn’t spend your high school career with a box of Bagel Bites on the couch every weeknight at 4:00, Nate Berkus is Oprah’s go-to decorator/interior designer/heartthrob. He’s gay, but I’ll never fully accept the fact that we’ll never grow old together. In a chic, sensibly designed home, of course.

Ricky Martin
I’m pretty sure that Ricky Martin is the reason I picked up Spanish. Sexy, talented, and a lover of leather pants, Ricky Martin is, in many ways, the ideal human.

Alexander McQueen
For those of you who weren’t lucky enough to see the stunning McQueen exhibit at the MET, allow me to summarize: What. A. Talented. Genius. Dark, deep, political and a relentless pursuer of beauty, McQueen is a legend we’ll always remember. And love.

Anderson Cooper
In May 2007, Out magazine ranked Cooper second on their list of the 50 “Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America.” We rank him first on our Gay Man Crush List. But c’mon – you’ve gotta love a smart and articulate Vanderbilt who’s not afraid to go grey.

John Amaechi
In a twisted act of fate, we didn’t even know who NBA player John Amaechi was until he came out in his book Man in the Middle.  A professional athlete who writes with bravery and sensitivity—we knew he was too good to be straight.

Amazing, attractive gay men: HC salutes you. You reaffirm our belief that our schoolgirl crushes transcend, race, age, religion, nationality, and, yes, sexuality.

Rachel Peck is a senior at Barnard College, Class of 2012, where she is majoring in English and Theatre and minoring in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Although she admits to actually enjoying high school in her hometown of Bexley, OH, her favorite thing to do is explore her new--slightly more exciting--home, New York City. When she isn't watching good (and bad...) TV, finding excuses to plan dinner with friends, window shopping, or napping, Rachel enjoys working for the Barnard admissions office, serving on her sorority's various boards, and writing for whoever will read it.  You can also follow her on Twitter (@peckrachel) if you're into that.
