How to Make a Katy Perry Halloween Costume

Whether you love her or hate her, there’s no denying that Katy Perry has had some interesting wardrobe choices. Her self-proclaimed weirdness has led her to become famous not only for her singing skills, but also for her kooky, eccentric, and all around crazy style. So with Halloween right around the corner, she’s the perfect go-to costume. That’s why we’ve come up with three DIY Katy Perry costume ideas—just remember to bring your cherry ChapStick!

Katy Perry’s California Gurl

First things first, you’re going to need that signature light purple wig, or at least some hairspray—Katy’s known for her colorful locks! Once you’ve got that, make yourself a heart headband by cutting a heart out of cardboard, punching a hole in the bottom, and attaching it onto a simple headband with some string. While Katy’s heart is bright purple, feel free to paint yours any fun color you want. Next, find a dress that you don’t mind getting a little, well, sticky. Super-glue an assortment of candy onto it—lollipops, Tootsie rolls, marshmallows, Hershey kisses, candy corn, Smarties, etc.—with an emphasis on adding a lot of color to the bottom. From there, start reliving your childhood by taking some beads and designing a crazy necklace to rock. After that, all that’s left to complete the look is a pair of pink tights and some super-colorful, super-fun shoes. Special bonus points if you can find someone to be your Snoop Dogg.

Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night’

Dressing up as a hung-over, hot mess for Halloween is boring. But, throw some oversized glasses, washed-out denim, and whole lot of dental work into the equation, and you’ve got yourself a hysterical, top-notch costume. To create the look, rewind back in time and whip out your favorite pink turtleneck from middle school. Once you’ve got that, you’ll need to find yourself a jean jumpsuit (something you’ve always wanted!). While Katy wears an acid wash denim romper over her turtleneck, any shade will do. As for the pink belt, tie some pink ribbon around your waist, or even make your own belt with some hot pink duct tape. But, to fully geek out, you’ll need some fun and nerdy teeth with braces. Luckily, they’re only $8, and once your slip the dentures in, you’ll be living the glory days of orthodontics. To complete the look, throw on a pair of oversized glasses (with tape in the middle), gel the front part of your hair so that it’s sticking up, and messily put your hair in braid. Voilà, you’re Katy Perry in her geekiest, messiest, most fun form!

Katy Perry’s VMA Cube

Looking to really get people talking? If so, Katy Perry’s 2011 VMA Cube look is right up your alley. Although Katy rocked Christian Dior for her outrageous geometric look, you can still successfully pull off this costume without breaking the bank—all you need are some basic pieces and a whole lot of felt or construction paper (we’ll be using felt in our instructions). First, rummage through your closet for a pink boat neck shirt and a plain black skirt. Once you’ve got those ready, it’s time to whip out the scissors and get ready for some arts and crafts. Cut out a triangle from a piece of green felt and a circle from some yellow felt. Lay them on your shirt so that the triangle is above the circle (just like in the picture), and fasten them on with some safety pins or fabric glue. For the skirt, cut out as many white felt squares and triangles as you can to fasten onto the material and create the shattered look of the piece. As for the most essential part of the outfit, the cube hat is surprisingly easy to make. At your local craft store, buy a Styrofoam cube. After it painting it yellow, super glue it to a headband (just be sure it’s really fastened on there). All that’s left is a pink wig (or some hairspray) and some colorful shoes!
