Collegiettes are notoriously busy on Sunday nights, so if you didn’t have time to watch the 2012 American Music Awards, don’t worry, because we’re here with everything you need to know about what went down at the Nokia Theatre last night.
First, let’s talk winners! Justin Bieber proved that he is the prince of pop music, taking home awards for Artist of the Year, Favorite Pop or Rock Album, and Favorite Male Pop or Rock Artist. Nicki Minaj did almost as well, getting multiple awards in the Rap and Hip-Hop categories. she was recognized as the Favorite Rap and Hip-Hop Artist, as well as winning the Favorite Rap and Hip-Hop Album award.
As far as old favorites go, Taylor Swift took home her 11th AMA when she was named the Favorite Female Country Musician, while Linkin Park proved that they are still going strong, taking home their 5th AMA when they were recognized as the Favorite Alternative Rock Artist. And, of course, Carrie Underwood‘s fourth album marks her fourth win in the category of Favorite Country Album.
But of course, the AMAs are always a place for new faces, too! This year’s summer sweetheart, Carly Rae Jepsen, won the award for New Artist of the Year, while David Guetta made history by accepting the first ever award for Favorite Artist in Electronic Dance Music, a brand new category this year. But winning isn’t everything – we know you also need all the gossip! Jelena made headlines again: even though the Biebs brought his mom as his date, it looks like he was hanging out with his on-again-off-again love Selena Gomez after the show! In other news, Christina Aguilera went pantless during her performance. And no music award show of this season would be complete without a little Gagnam Style! MC Hammer and PSY showcased the now infamous pony dance.
