The Best Group Halloween Costumes for 2012

Years ago, all your Halloween stress was centered around where you should go trick-or-treating. Now, you’re even more obsessed with having a Halloween costume that is easy, creative, and will definitely get that cutie’s attention. While having a solo costume is a great way to express yourself, it’s also fun to dress up with your closest friends. However, it’s tough to agree on just one idea. Collegiettes, take a look at our absolute favorite group costume ideas for this Halloween.

The cast of Awkward

Every so often — scratch that, everyday – you’re seriously convinced that your life is an episode of MTV’s hottest show, Awkward. Since you’re basically Jenna Hamilton already, why not sport her terrible arm cast on Halloween? Don’t worry, your friends can join in on the fun! Your sassy BFF would be the perfect Sadie Saxton – all she needs is a cheerleader’s uniform. With a flannel shirt and backwards cap, your boyfriend can dress up as Matty McKibben. Or, if you’re more Team Jake, have him don a varsity jacket instead. Most of your costume pieces can be found in your and your friends’ closets, so why would anyone veto this idea?

Team USA’s Fab Five

At the London Games, all eyes were on Team USA’s beyond epic gymnastics team. Well, that and Ryan Lochte’s rocking bod. If you were jealous of the “Fab Five’s” amazing skills, take this holiday to pretend to be them! This ensemble is as easy as sporting black leggings and matching hoodies from American Apparel. To distinguish yourself from each other by wearing a tag that says your fab five member’s last name. Topical and easy – how could you not love it?

Members of an aerobics video

Whenever you have your daily dose of “Insanity,” you can’t help but hate the ensemble cast. As you’re sweating and casually suffering from exhaustion, the actors on the T.V. are filled with so much energy. Can we say jealous? With some fitness clothes, you and your friends can emulate your favorite workout video’s crew. Give this idea a comedic twist by rocking neon pieces. Richard Simmons would be so proud.

The Spice Girls

Don’t be fooled, collegiettes: the Spice Girls are back and better than ever. Not only is there going to be a Spice Girls musical in London, but also their performance at the Olympics’ closing ceremony was to die for. In the event you’ve been knocked unconscious sometime during the past fifteen years, allow me to break down each ensemble for you. If Baby Spice was always your favorite, your ensemble consists of a button-down top, miniskirt, and some high socks. Oh, and don’t forget to tie your hair in high pigtails! Pay homage to Posh Spice with a LBD (tell me you remember “The Little Gucci” dress scene from their movie, Spice World), straightened hair, and some major heels. Keep it casual as Sporty Spice with your gym attire. If you’re unable to obtain a Scary Spice wig, overdose in leopard print! Since Ginger Spice is all about representing her UK roots, sport some British pieces- which can be found at your local thrift store- with tall black boots. If you’re feeling super creative, become a redhead for the night with some temporary dye. For a finishing touch, you and your friends should carry around faux microphones.

The Pretty Little Liars

Now that Pretty Little Liars is on its fall hiatus, you’re experiencing several withdrawal symptoms. To ease the pain, you and your three BFFs should dress up as the famous foursome. The best part about this idea is that your Halloween outfit is already in your closet. Embrace your inner Aria with an ethereal dress and some statement bracelets. If you’re feeling brave, add a pink streak to you hair! Since Hanna is the ultimate girly girl, rock a bodycon dress with a jean jacket and an awesome pair of heels. Spencer fans must wear something polished and preppy—think J.Crew model. As for Emily, look sporty chic in a cozy sweatsuit. Just make sure you give it a fashionable twist with some nice accessories. Go the extra mile and have one of your friends dress up as A with a black hoodie and black skinny jeans. Everyone who loves the show will adore your costume!

Mr. and Mrs. One Direction

Call me crazy, but I’m obsessed with One Direction. Actually, you can’t call me crazy because you secretly have a poster of Harry in your dorm. Embrace your cougar status by coercing your guy friends into dressing up as the adorable blokes Hopefully, they won’t have to buy anything—copying the band’s look is as easy with a polished button-down and sharp blazer. While having a pseudo Liam Payne is nice, where do you and your sorority sisters come in? With a white tee, fabric markers, and a wedding veil, you now have the opportunity to be Mrs. Zayn Malik. Start off the night right by listening to their latest single, “Live While We’re Young!”

Social Media Sites

Sometimes you really don’t know what you would do without your favorite social media websites: Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest… the list goes on! For a unique costume that is really a conversation starter, have you and your friends dress up as your favorite site. Just don’t be afraid to get creative. If you’re going to that awesome frat party as Pinterest, wear a ton of those retro button pins – it’s easy and inexpensive. If you’re obsessed with your LinkedIn account, make sure to look super professional with a blouse and pencil skirt. Everyone will be jealous of your innovative idea.

2012’s Pop Stars

Move aside Lady Gaga, there are some new pop princesses in town. Between Carly Rae Jepsen’s new album and Britney Spears’s X Factor debut, 2012 has definitely been the year of the popstar. So how could you and your friends not dress up as your favorite music artist this year? Channel Katy Perry with a colorful wig and an eye-popping dress. If you can figure out how to reenact Perry’s “Firework” music video–a.k.a. have sparks fly out of your chest–give it a go! Or represent the late Amy Winehouse with denim cutoffs, voluminous hair, and a sick cat eye. Don’t forget to include your guy friends. After all, emulating Justin Bieber is as easy as sporting a zip-up hoodie and some swag!

90’s Supermodels

From Naomi Campbell to Christy Turlington, it’s no surprise that the 90s were the Supermodels’ golden age. This Halloween, unleash your inner 90s child by paying homage to queens of the catwalk. Your ensemble can be as basic as super straight hair, a bodycon dress, platform heels, and a “Hi my name is Linda Evangelista” sticker. If you want to give your outfit a retro twist, head to your favorite thrift store and pretend that you’re Claudia Schiffer on a shoot. Before you leave the house, don’t forget to practice your fierce strut.

Taylor Swift and her boyfriends

This costume idea is perfect for you if:

A) You like to hang out with the boys.
B) You’re starting to get really annoyed with the fact that Taylor Swift can’t write a song without bashing her latest ex.
C) “We Are Never Getting Back Together” is so stuck in your head, it’s borderline painful.
D) All of the above.

Since the country singer’s love history is almost as complex as your chem homework, this idea will get a ton of laughs. Copy Taylor’s signature look with a floral sundress and a bright red lip. For a finishing touch, carry a guitar around. As for your guy friends, they have a lot of options. Have one of your friends channel his inner Kennedy with dashing blazer and polo. As for Taylor Lautner’s doppelganger, have your hottest friend channel his inner Jacob Black by ditching the shirt. Just because he’s your guy friend doesn’t mean you can’t have nice eye candy for the night!
