New York Fashion Week Fall 2012: Titania Inglis
Titania Inglis has recently been identified as one to watch in the fashion industry by the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation, which sponsors seven rising fashion designers' shows. Winning the EDFF sponsorship is a great indicator of success, too--past EDFF alums include Proenza Schouler and Mandy Coon, among many others, and is voted upon by industry legends like Julie Gilhart and Kim Hastreiter. Inglis, based in Brooklyn, was recognized for her dedication to sustainable design--all of her pieces are made in a factory in New York, from "sustainably sourced fabrics including Japanese organic cotton, French vegetable-tanned leather, and dead stock wool from New York’s garment industry."
Inglis proves that sustainable design doesn't have to be a potato sack, either. Her Fall 2012 collection is intelligent and edgy-but-wearable. Each piece is rich with detail yet streamlined, crisply tailored and thoughtfully constructed, from the mustard-colored leather mini-shorts slitted with a neatly defined curved edge to the back slit in collection's final piece, a truly epic cape with pink lining. The collection as well as the presentation had a '90s-meets-today feeling, with its plaid prints and Doc Martens-clad models walking to the sounds of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Maybe like what Angela Chase would wear if she grew up and became the editor-in-chief of an elegant yet badass fashion magazine. I will confidently say that I think Inglis is a rising star, and I expect to see her innovative collection and sharp design sensibilities in all the glossies in the not-too-distant future. Take a look at these photos from backstage and the presentation to see for yourself (all photos by me).
