I had the greatest Saturday last week. I was sitting on my couch in my apartment, hanging out with some of the greatest influencers in the world of fashion. Big names like Teen Vogue’s editor-in-chief Amy Astley, Vogue creative director Grace Coddington, and designers such as Phillip Lim and Erin Fetherston were telling me how they got to where they are today and the best ways to break into the fashion industry. It was truly amazing!
Okay, okay—so they weren’t really in my living room with me. But they were on my computer! I was streaming video from Teen Vogue Fashion University, an awesome event that Teen Vogue puts on every year in New York City. Teen Vogue gathered some of the biggest names in the fashion industry to talk about their experiences and how to navigate the fashion world. If you adore fashion and magazines, this is definitely a must-watch! Where else will you be able to get advice from Olivier Theyskens, Nicole Richie, and Teen Vogue editors on how to break into the industry? And the best part was that I didn’t have to fly all the way out to NYC to experience it—I could watch it in my own apartment in North Carolina.
Although all of the speakers were fantastic, my favorite panel was the “Amy Astley and the Teen Vogue Editors” panel (check out a preview below!). Being an aspiring magazine journalist, I could not have asked for better advice from more qualified people from how to get a career in magazines, especially since Teen Vogue is a mag I’ve been obsessed with since it came out in 2003. The editors answered a lot of valuable questions, such as how to gain fashion experience when you don’t live in New York and if majoring in science will prevent you from getting hired in the industry (it won’t—and it might actually help you!). Oh, and did I mention that one of the attendees performs a rap dedicated to all of editors during the panel? Pretty cool.
Bummed you missed out on Fashion U? Don’t be; the videos are still available for streaming online! After you watch the preview above, you can click through to access the full videos. Trust me, if you love fashion and magazines, you don’t want to miss this!
