Name: Timmi Jandro
Job Title and Description: Founder and Global Sales/Production
College/Major: University of Southern California, Business Marketing with a Minor in Spanish
HC: What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?
Timmi Jandro: As one of the owners of Energy Muse, a typical day entails wearing many hats. My main focus is managing and expanding global sales, working with our sales department, overseeing our production department, and working with our financial team.
HC: What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?
TJ: I started working upon graduating from USC in the garment industry where I was hired to be a sales representative. This company did business with many of the mass merchants in the U.S. such as Sears, JC Penney’s, and Walmart. The best part of starting at this company was that I worked with the reception, design, accounting, production, and shipping departments. Then, I went into the sales department where I was mentored by two of the top sales representatives. It was an invaluable experience.
HC: What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?
TJ: I wish that I actually learned how to make jewelry when we began our business. I am happy to say that I have finally learned how to make jewelry, but this is really is a must!
HC: Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?
TJ: The person that changed my professional life for the better was my first employer. He hired me as a salesperson but stressed the importance of me learning all aspects of the business before selling. This experience gave me the knowledge to start several businesses including Energy Muse.
HC: What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?
TJ: I love going to Disneyland, not only because it is the happiest place on earth, but because going there sparks my creativity. It allows me to play, laugh and live! One of my favorite quotes is “If you can dream it, you can do it!” from Walt Disney.
HC: What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?
TJ: I have learned that running a business by instinct can only get you so far. Once your business reaches a certain point, it is important to have people around you that you can count on to teach you more than you know, guide you, and take your business to new levels.
HC: What is the best part of your job?
TJ: The best part of my job is the fact that Energy Muse provides a tool that can help people. I feel it is important to give back and help people whenever you can. The testimonials that we receive from our customers fills me with such positive energy. Also, having the opportunity to work with my best friend for more than 12 years has been a definite plus.
HC: What do you look for when considering hiring someone?
TJ: First, we look for people that have the skills and knowledge needed for the position we are hiring for. Second, we make sure that they will fit in within the Energy Muse team. Since we sell “energy” it is also important that they must have good energy, too.
HC: What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?
TJ: Whether you own your own company or not, choose a job that you are passionate about and love. If possible, pick a job that makes a difference in the world; it will be so much more rewarding!
