When it comes to hot makeup trends that just don’t seem to be going away, the smokey eye has earned its spot on this list. The look is sexy, mysterious, messy and polished all at once and really helps your eyes pop. It’s also a look you can adjust to fit your eye color and skin-tone since you can do a smokey eye in black, grey, purple, or any number of other shades.

The smokey eye popped up all over spring 2011 Fashion Week fashion shows and doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. But many women are intimidated by the look and don’t know where to start. Fear not, Chrissy’s Beauty School is here with some tips from Chad Hayduk, Makeup Artist and Co-Founder of Three Custom Color Specialists. Read on for Chad’s step-by-step suggestions for creating a smokey eye and check out some products that help take the guesswork out of application below. Soon, you’ll be looking smokin’, ladies!

Smokey Eye Step-By-Step

Step 1:Prep your eyes and create a smooth canvas by applying concealer under the eyes and on the eyelids to eliminate any darkness or redness. Chad suggests using Three Custom Color Specialists’ Crème Concealer/Foundation.

Step 2: To create a modern smokey eye, you’ll want your color to be deepest at the lash lines and blended out, Chad says. Start by applying a black eye shadow along the upper and lower lash lines. Chad recommends Three Custom Color Specialists’ Cool Black Eye Shadow.

Next, apply a grey shadow and blend it up towards your brow bone. Chad suggests using Three Custom Color Specialists’ Cool Smoke Eye Shadow. To make the inner corners of your eyes and your brow bone pop, add a bit of highlighting shadow near your tear duct and under your brow bone. Try Three Custom Color Specialists’Champagne Eye Shadow.

Step 3: Add some intensity by lining the inner rims of your eyes and the upper and lower lash lines with eye liner. Chad suggests using Three Custom Color Specialists’ Opaline Crème Eye Definer in Aurora. Continuing the blending trend, you’ll want to blend the eye liner into your lashes with a small eye shadow brush.

Step 4: Add the finishing touches by applying a coat of mascara and taming your brows with a brow gel such as Three Custom Color Specialists’Tinted Brow Gel. Chad says that a groomed eyebrow helps make the smokey eye appear polished.
