Changing up your look with a new DIY hairstyle is a fun (and free) way to transform your beauty routine. Give yourself a few extra minutes to get ready and set your beloved hair straightener aside. Her Campus is bringing you the how-tos for this spring’s coolest hair trends. Be prepared to be your friends’ new honorary hair stylist.

1.Top Knot with Back Braid

The upside down French braid is unexpected and eye-catching. Paired with a top knot or sock bun, this braid turns your hair into a piece of art. Turn your head upside down and have a friend French braid your hair all the way to the top of your head. Then pull it together into a ponytail and wrap into a bun. Use a teasing comb for added texture and leave some pieces out to make it look a little messy. This hairstyle looks best with fun cocktail dresses or shirts with interesting back details such as heart cut-outs or exposed zippers.

2. Curling Wand Curls

I discovered this unique curling iron on spring break and let me tell you, curling my hair will never be the same. Unlike ordinary curling irons, there’s no clamp on curling wands. Using this new hair tool will take a little getting used to but you will love the bouncy, flowing curls it creates. With your right hand, hold the curling wand over the opposite side of your head with the tip pointing downwards. Take a piece of hair from the left side of your hair and wrap it backwards around the curling wand, loosely if you want loose curls and tightly for a spiral look.  Repeat this step for all of your hair and use the opposite hand to curl the other side of your hair. If you want a tousled look, only wrap the end of your hair around the curling wand. For softer curls, brush out your hair after curling it.

Here are some great curling wands:

Pretty Fierce Ceramic Crackle Print Curling Wand, $21.99, Remington

Hot Tools Flipperless Curling Wand, $33.48, Amazon

3.Clip-in Feathers

Who says hair accessories are only for little girls? Here at HC we love to add flair to our looks and clip-in feathers from Fine Featherheads are a perfect way to do this. These fun clips are the way to wear the feather trend this season. Feather clip-ins are a more tasteful option than oversized flower clips. We recommend wearing hair straight or wavy and putting just one feather clip on the side of your hair. If you’re in the mood to be Bohemian and carefree, this is the perfect hairstyle to try. Wear with skinny jeans, a crop top, and wedges.

4.Beach Waves

Channel your inner beach babe with relaxed waves. Divide your hair into sections and braid each section into a loose braid. Then straighten each braid and let them cool before undoing them. The result is effortless beauty. If you have naturally wavy hair, you can also achieve this look by spraying damp hair with salt water and letting it air dry. Try it for a relaxed weekend look with patterned skinnies, Converse, an oversized satchel, and a basic tee.

5. Waterfall Braid

Braids are all the rage this year and look great no matter what type of hair you have. Try this fun twist on the French braid and see the natural highlights show as you separate each piece. Start at one side of your head and braid your hair as if you were French braiding it. Instead of continuing with the bottom piece let it hang down and add in a new piece of hair. Repeat this process as many times as you want. We recommend waterfalling one side of your hair and leaving the rest unbraided. Check out this tutorial.

Add a clip or bow to the end of your waterfall braid for an added cute factor. Try this look with a western jean shirt, leggings, boots, and a simple necklace. The waterfall braid is the perfect everyday hairstyle.

6. Hair Bow

Make Lady Gaga proud by turning your hair into a bow. This cute hairstyle is perfect if you want to stand out from the crowd. Put your hair into a high ponytail and pull the hair through so there’s a loop. Divide the loop into two sections and bring the remaining hair back through the middle of the loop. Secure with bobby pins. Wear with a shirt that has a unique neckline. To offset the girlyness of the bow, pair with a leather jacket or grungy boots.
