Looking For Weekend Plans? Join in on Dove’s Self-Esteem Weekend!

Hey, collegiettes™! The Weekend is almost here and this isn’t your typical party, brunch with friends, catch up on homework weekend. No, this The Dove Self-Esteem Weekend, a movement dedicated to helping young girls across the country gain confidence, get some guidance, and feel awesome about themselves.

All across the country, on this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, women will be giving back to the community by helping young girls who are struggling with self confidence. All it takes is an hour of your time, collegiettes™! You can check out the Dove Facebook page for events happening in your area, but if one of those doesn’t strike your fancy, you can still get involved. Here are some activity ideas that you can do with a younger sorority sister, a student from your high school, or any young girl you know who is in need of a confidence boost and a role model (which would be you!):

  • Build a Confidence playlist on iTunes with inspiring songs like “Unwritten,” “Stronger,” and “Fighter.” Of course, it’s not required that you have a dance party to these songs in which you show off your fiercest moves (like the sprinkler), but, I mean, you already have the playlist made, so…
  • Get together with your mentee and a large stack of magazines. Make collages of the things that inspire you, whether it’s confident celebs, pictures of your interests, or inspiring quotes.
  • Have a cupcake party. This sound super simple, but one of the biggest issues young girls deal with have to do with their body. Use this as an opportunity to talk about body image with your mentee. Remind her that it’s more than okay to treat yourself sometime — especially when that treat is red velvet cupcakes.
  • If you know your mentee really well (maybe it’s your little sister or a family friend you’ve known forever), write her a note listing five things that amaze you about her. Remember when you were younger and it seemed like everyone from your teaches to your parents to your friends were telling you what was wrong with you? She’s probably going through that right now, so use the Dove Self-Esteem Weekend as an opportunity to counteract that.
  • Have a no makeup day. Dove is all about inner beauty and, while makeup is fun, sometimes it’s important to remember you don’t need it. Prove to your mentee that you can be confident and feel beautiful sans coverup and treat her to a movie and lunch, rocking your makeup-free face.

Take advantage of this awesome opportunity to help someone out and pledge an hour of your time this weekend!

Michelle King is currently pursuing a Publishing degree from Emerson College. She was a web intern at Seventeen magazine this past summer and ultimately hopes to move to New York and go into web publishing. Her role models are Jane Pratt, Amy Poehler, Megan McCafferty, and her brother. She loves traveling (she's been to 14 countries), attending concerts (her dream is to see Florence + the Machine live), long distance running, and playing around with clothes and makeup. Women who can do lipliner perfectly are also her role models.
