SCUclasses.com: Scott Hardy

4/10/2013

We all know how stressful it can be registering for classes each quarter but thanks to Scott Hardy, the process just got a whole lot easier.  Scott, a junior bioengineering major, created SCUclasses, a site that helps cut down the time and frustration of registering for classes.

Scott got the idea for the site while preparing to register for classes.  He noticed how time consuming and irritating the process can be, and was determined to find a solution.  He had just finished a major development on SCUbooks, another site he created that tells you which books you need for the quarter at the best prices in just 38 seconds.  Scott says, “I was already in the mindset of challenging the existing systems and infrastructure that SCU has set up for us, and Courseavail seemed like an easy target,” echoing the fact that there is room for improvement in some of SCU’s existing systems.  From that, he had the idea to create “a better Courseavail that is designed to make it easier to create schedules.”

Alpha Delta Pi Comes Home to Santa Clara

12/5/2012

Despite the fact that Santa Clara University does not formally recognize Greek life, off-campus Greek life, governed by Santa Clara Panhellenic, has a wide presence and continues to expand. Prior to this year, Santa Clara Panhellenic consisted of only four sororities: Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma. This year, Santa Clara Panhellenic welcomed Alpha Delta Pi as its fifth sorority.

Alpha Delta Pi currently has 140 chapters across the country and is continuing to grow with 7 colonizations this year. After an application process headed by the National Panhellenic Conference, ADPi knew in May 2012 that Santa Clara Panhellenic would be one of its newest homes.

Although ADPi was only established at Santa Clara recently, the sorority has already brought a lot to both the campus and Greek community.

“ADPi has provided a home for women who were interested in a new sorority opportunity. Also, it provides an opportunity for creative leadership for the women who really wanted to start something new. It allows women to not only join a sorority but also found and build their organization,” said Andrea Farnan, ADPi’s Senior Leadership Consultant at Santa Clara.

Alpha Delta Pi: Andrea Farnan

If you’ve seen a blonde, bubbly young woman, often sporting a “Go ADPi” button, around Benson, chances are it was Andrea Farnan. Benson is where Andrea typically holds her office hours as a Senior Leadership Consultant for Alpha Delta Pi, Santa Clara Panhellenic’s newest sorority. Originally from Norman, Oklahoma, Andrea is a graduate of George Washington University’s Class of 2011, where she studied international affairs and anthropology.

While most people from her hometown typically stay nearby, Andrea knew she wanted to venture farther away. While attending GWU in Washington, DC, she became a member of Alpha Delta Pi’s Alpha Pi chapter during her freshman year. At GWU, Andrea participated in many community service projects and was involved in campus activities, such as Balance: The GW Ballet Group. Andrea not only participated in several groups on campus, but also enjoyed activities off campus and around the DC metropolitan area. She often brought aspects of her campus life into the larger scope of the city.

“The thing I loved about DC is that you were always so ‘moved in’ to the greater community. For example, if we were doing a community service project for ADPi, we might be gift-wrapping at a big event at one of the Smithsonians for Christmas. We’re doing something you do so many times for a community service project, but we’re having such a ‘panned in’ experience doing so,” said Andrea.

While trying to get involved on campus during her freshman year at GWU, Andrea participated in Formal Recruitment.

“I was really looking for a ‘home away from home’ because I didn’t know a soul going into college. I was looking for girls that were from all different backgrounds, genuine, smart, and interesting.”

Men's Soccer: Ryan Masch

10/9/2012

As a freshman this year, Ryan Masch starts as attacking midfielder for Santa Clara’s Men’s Soccer Team. Coming from San Jose, California, Ryan has been playing soccer since he was four years old and it was his dedication to the sport since then that has led to his many accomplishments as an athlete.

Ryan grew up playing on the DeAnza Force with current Santa Clara teammates James Huffer, Max Ornstil, and Dylan Autran.  However, this was not the only time Ryan got to play with future Broncos.  While living in Florida to play on the U-17 National Team, Ryan also played with current Santa Clara freshmen, Jared Hegardt and Kendall McIntosh.  Since arriving here, Ryan has already accomplished a lot.  He scored the game winning goal against both Duke and Stanford, chipping the ball over the goalie’s head during the Stanford game.  In addition, he has already been named WCC’s Player of the Week for the week of September 17th.

Much of Ryan’s success as a soccer player has stemmed from looking up to role models and listening to advice from others.  He finds Andres Iniesta of Barcelona both motivating and inspiring and says that the best advice he’s been given is to “learn how to love to win.”  For a little extra motivation, Ryan enjoys listening to Rick Ross as part of his pre-game routine.

Car-less At The Clara: How to Use Basic Bay Area Public Transportation

10/9/2012

Although I love how beautiful our campus is, I must admit that there are times when I can feel a bit stranded and just need to venture out and explore the area.  The lack of a college town surrounding Santa Clara leaves students with very few off-campus options within walking distance.  While there’s not too much to do right around campus, it’s important to note that Santa Clara is located in the Bay Area--a mecca of entertainment, to-die-for shopping, and beautiful escapes.

Coming from the east coast, having a car here at school isn’t really an option for me.  There were times during my freshman year when utilizing the opportunity to travel seemed nearly impossible.  However, throughout the year I learned that there are plenty of ways to get around the area without having your own car.

The easiest way to get around the area would be to befriend someone who has a car.  Depending on how charming you are, you could potentially convince your friend to drive you anywhere ranging from just 3 miles to Santana Row or 350 miles down to L.A.  Not only will you have a ride to somewhere you want to go, but also some friendly company!

If that doesn’t work out, Santa Clara is conveniently located near the CalTrain station and Valley Transit Authority (VTA).  Both of these stops are located directly across the street from the University entrance on El Camino Real.  CalTrain passes through Santa Clara approximately every hour while VTA has two stops close to campus with regular bus service.
