International College Guys Tell All About Dating

7/26/2012

We’ve all heard what American college guys think about relationships, but what about boys from other countries? HC sat down in a London pub with a group of cute guys from all over the world to discuss their views on love.

1. What do you like in a girl?

“Nothing really specific, but I tend to pay a lot of attention to her sense of humor.” – Mark, University of Melbourne, Australia, 22.

“A unique personality is a must, I also pay a lot of attention to how a girl dresses—not how expensive her clothes are, of course, but how she presents herself to everyone. A girl’s fashion choice says a lot about her intelligence and the way she perceives herself.” Raj, University of Melbourne, Australia, 21.

“I like girls who share interests with me. A lot of people say opposites attract but that never really worked out for me; you need enough differences to keep it interesting, but it’s always attractive when she genuinely likes the things I like.” –Anonymous international college guy

Fall 2010 Fashion, Inspired by our Favorite TV Shows

8/16/2010

Carrie Bradshaw introduced us to Manolo Blahnik mary-janes and gave us the confidence to stroll down 5th Avenue in dresses entirely covered with flowers. When “Gossip Girl” premiered in fall 2007 we fell in love with Blair Waldorf’s bold headbands and preppy couture. TV has been inspiring fashion for ages—what do fall 2010 shows have in store for us?

2000s Throwback

The new ABC series “My Generation” is a mockumentary that follows the lives of a group of high school students who graduated in 2000 in Austin, Texas as they stumble through what Time magazine calls “the decade from hell.” While the events that shape their lives are mostly tragic, you will get a walk down memory lane of all the styles that came to and left your closet and graced the pages of Elle in the past ten years. Obviously breaking out the complete Juicy tracksuit/Uggs/trucker hat combo would look a bit silly nowadays, but mix-matching your vintage items with contemporary trends can look very refreshing. Look through your old clothes and you just might find a gem!

Sneak Preview: Fall 2010 Fashion Trends You Can’t Miss

7/12/2010

Now that 4th of July has passed and the end of your internship is in sight, you can’t help but start to think about fall… and the best part of fall?  Fall clothes!

As Fall 2010 shows wrapped up in London, Paris, Milan and New York City, many editors and buyers found themselves confused and a little disappointed. After a decade of colorful hoopla, fall 2010 collections are, asElle fashion reporter Anne Slowey described, "sober." Function and practicality replaced dramatic prints and couture-like details, and color palettes were reduced to black and white with a splash of camel. Fall items should be in stores soon after semi-annual sales end, and here are some gems among the rubble that HC particularly loves. Have fun shopping!

1. Medieval Detailing

Months after his death, you can still count on Alexander McQueen to jazz up a sleepy season. While just about every other designer opted for modest materials such as wool and cashmere and frugal decoration, McQueen embraced luster and Dark Ages extravagance, flaunting haunting metallic details teeming with eerie elegance. A full McQueen creation is a bit theatrical (and expensive) for everyday wear, but tops, dresses and jewelry with Medieval illuminations will make you stand out in a sea of cardigans and poncho scarves. Bold paisley creations from other designers will also give you a similar effect.

The Best Gifts For Guys – We Tracked Them Down

6/30/2010

Remember that episode from season 1 of Gossip Girl when Serena got Dan a really expensive watch for Christmas and he actually made her return it? Finding a gift for your significant other is hard. You have to pick out something in the acceptable price range that’s appropriate for the occasion, and also make sure it’s something special, something he’ll appreciate.

On top of that, boys don’t like “stuff” in general. I helped my guy friend pack for the summer a couple weeks ago, and literally all he had was clothes, a laptop, a basketball and contact solution. Even the people stuck on an island in Lost have more belongings than he does. Guys don’t seem to care for anything beyond basic survival essentials, and there’s nothing romantic about giving your boyfriend shaving cream and video games (obviously a necessity).

They say, “it’s the thought that counts,” and it’s true. It’s established that boys don’t perform close readings of text messages like we do, but they will think about the gift you give them, and show it off to their friends if it’s good. The key to getting your guy the perfect gift is not spending tons of money or trying to think up the most convoluted romantic gesture until your head explodes. Get him something simple and thoughtful to show that you care and that you’ve been listening.

Sand And the City: Your Best SATC-Inspired Beach Looks

6/14/2010

A summer isn't complete without hitting the beach, and in my opinion, one of the best parts of going to the beach is picking out the perfect beach look. We picked out four beach looks inspired by the timeless Sex and the City 2 girls. Choose your favorite and go out in the sun!

1. Carrie

You are the leading lady of your life and the lives of those around you. You are always the center of attention, and for good reasons: you're outgoing, charming, cute, fun and thoughtful. You love your body and you love fashion, and you aren't afraid to turn heads with bold, trendy looks.

Your bathing suit:

Forget the conventional bikini and the one-piece; go for a more unconventional cut that flatters your body, or a swimsuit studded with lots of metals, which are hot this season.

Rocking Sticky Summer Runway Trends: How to Wear Tie-Dye, Rompers, and Crazy Prints

5/17/2010

I live by fashion magazines, but sometimes I feel like the fashion editors forget that what looks good on the runway may not necessarily look good in real life. My physique is nowhere near 5'11 and 115 lbs, and that breathtaking silk parachute dress with mosaic leggings on Project Runway will frankly make me look like a mushroom. However, runway trends don't have to remain on the runway. If you get to know your body and get a little creative, you can make even the most difficult trends work for you. We took three of summer's hottest—but also stickiest—trends and show you how to translate them from the runway to your way.

1. Tie-Dye

From multicolored sequins to paisley and island images, prints are making a forceful comeback on the runway. Tie-dye, riddled with hippie images and memories of preschool summer camp (or that sorority sisterhood event where you ruined your white jacket), is the dark horse of the group. It's not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think "high fashion", but designers have found ways to make it elegant, and so can you.

The key to not looking like you're on your way to a Woodstock reenactment? Modern, unconventional cuts and colors that complement one another. Don't get a garment with every color of the rainbow, and definitely don't get a tie-dye crewneck t-shirt. The fuzzy outlines and the white lines will make the colors look brighter than they would on any other design, so choose colors that are a notch more subdued than your usual choices. As for shoes and jacket choices, keep it dark and one color to let your tie dye do all the talking.
