HC Abroad: London Calling!

3/8/2012

Ello, Collegiettes!

Now that I have become quite the globetrotter, I am happy to add London to my list of travelled destinations! After hearing so many wonderful things about London, I was incredibly excited to finally start my adventure in the beautiful city. I could not wait to see Big Ben, plan my wedding at Westminster Abbey, chat with the Queen and finally hear people speaking English!

After we arrived, we began our search for a restaurant for dinner and as we walked around Piccadilly Circus, we passed the Prince of Whales Theatre that featured Mamma Mia! With the next show starting in 20 minutes, we bought our tickets and wolfed down a quick bite at a Lebanese restaurant next-door. I have to say, singing and dancing in the theatre was an excellent start to our adventures in London, and the rest of the trip was just as amazing.

The following day, we toured the city on a hop-on hop-off bus tour, and it was a great way to see London since we were only in town for a short time! We hopped off at Big Ben, thus starting my photo-shoot with Big Ben. Seriously, I could not stop taking pictures of Ben and the Parliament building. I was obsessed. And conveniently, the Westminster Abbey is directly across the street from Ben! The obsessive photo-shoot continued!

HC Abroad: Off to Deutschland!

3/8/2012

Hello, Collegiettes!

After a wild and tiresome weekend in Paris, I am relieved to report that my trip to Cologne much more tame and much less exhausting! And while we embraced being tourists in Paris, we played it fairly low-key in Cologne, and enjoyed an unconventional trip in Deutschland.

HC Abroad: Paris, the city of louvre

2/22/2012

Bonjour collegiettes!
I hope everyone is enjoying the semester and made it through the first round of exams without too much fuss! I too had an exam last week on the history of the European Union; it was a relatively painless process, and now I can say that I know more about the EU than most EU citizens! Watch out!
But the highlight of my weekend was my trip to Paris!

I was excited about this trip for many reasons: I had never been to Paris before, I could not wait to begin my journey on the high-speed Thalys train, and most importantly, I could not wait to see all of the beautiful Parisians and their incredible fashion sense.

So I began my trip on Friday afternoon on the Thalys train, and it was awesome! Previously, I took trains to Amsterdam and other cities in Belgium, and it was grimy and old– not really that comfortable for a long journey. But I got on board the Thalys train and it was so chic with dark red and plum velvet seats and incredibly comfortable. I took a nice little nap on the way there in preparation for the busy days that I had ahead of me!

HC Abroad: "The Venice of the North"- My trip to Bruges

2/8/2012

Hello, collegiettes!

I hope everyone is enjoying the semester, I sure am! Except for the weather, of course. I know my friends in Missouri were enjoying unseasonably warm weather last week, 60 degrees! Europe has been hit with incredibly cold weather this past week, though I’m happy to report that Brussels seems to be mild compared to the rest of Europe! Over the weekend we had about an inch of snowfall, and since then the temperature has been in the low 20s. However, it could be worse. I could be in Eastern Europe, where the snow and temperatures have sparked a crisis.

This week has been particularly stressful, collegiettes! Who would have thought that planning trips across Europe could make me so tense? I mean, really, trying to plan trips to specific cities, on a certain weekend, at a certain time, at a good time of year (in terms of weather) and booking the perfect hostel is hard work. And, whoever said that you could travel around Europe for a bargain, I’d like to see. My bank account would beg to differ.
So these past two weeks I have been staying around Brussels in anticipation for my many adventures to come, starting with Paris next weekend! But to keep myself out of a boredom slump, I got a group together and went on a day-trip to Bruges, Belgium!

HC Abroad: This is Amsterdam!

2/1/2012

Hi, collegiettes!
Now that the month of February has begun, my schedule is packed with trips near and far! I hope you have enjoyed reading about my trips thus far, and you look forward to reading about my adventures to come! But first, I have to tell you about my trip to Amsterdam!

The trip began with a lot of confusion, as our group of 12 stood on the train platform waiting for adventure to begin. We waited anxiously for our train to arrive when suddenly we realized that our train had been cancelled. Bummer. But the Amsterdam gods must have been looking down upon us that day because, to our surprise, a woman with a Southern accent  (Finally, someone who speaks English!) approached us and found us an alternate route to Amsterdam! We were back on our way!

We arrived in Amsterdam later that night and immediately found our hostel, Bob’s Youth Hostel. Now, don’t be fooled by the name. The hostel is not as sketchy as it sounds! The hostel had tables and chairs for visitors to sit and hangout, the walls were covered with flags and drawings from previous guests and speakers were blasting tunes from Phish and Bob Marley- it is Amsterdam, after all! After we were settled in our room, we set out to explore the city.

HC Abroad: Adventures in Ghent!

1/17/2012

Hello collegiettes!
I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and the first couple weeks of the semester have not been too stressful!

This week I went to visit the Universite libre de Bruxelles where I will be learning about Belgian culture! The campus was very different from what you typically see in America. It was very small and did not have the ‘grand’ features that we are accustom to. Our professor is this fascinating woman who actually looks like Meryl Streep when she played Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

She talked to us about the cultural differences that she noticed between Europeans and Americans on her most recent trip to Chicago. Take note: when you are eating, you have the fork in your left hand and the knife if your right; you cut your food, put the knife down, switch the fork to the right hand, put your left hand on your lap and then eat. Sound about right? Well, you might as well have a theater marquee hanging over your head that says ‘I AM AMERICAN”, because the locals will notice, and they will judge you.

This was my first lesson on Belgian culture. It should be an interesting semester.

On Saturday, I went with some friends on a trip to Ghent, Belgium! It’s a thirty-minute train ride from Brussels and is one of Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Cities in the World. Seriously, this is one of the most underrated destinations, located in the incredibly underrated country of Belgium.

HC Abroad: The flavors of Belgium!

1/11/2012

Bonjour, Collegiettes!

Well, it has been a busy week here in Brussels, but I have so many great things to fill you in on! The flight to Brussels did not get my trip off to a good start. In case you did not know, the weather in Brussels is pretty awful and we had to battle storms while landing. Collegiettes, this was one of the scariest moments of my life. There was so much turbulence, I was praying that the airplane scene from Lost was not in our future! Of course, we made it in safely, but it took hours for my head and stomach to recover.

Upon arrival, I met my four roommates; Elise, Beth, Alex and Brooke, and we moved into our house! It’s a cute little two-story house with a basement, five beds and a courtyard. Perfect for when we actually get some nice weather! After settling in, we set out to explore the city and we found some surprising differences between America and Belgium.

The first surprising difference was ordering water at restaurants. Yes, collegiettes, no one in Belgium will just fill your water glass immediately when you sit down. Also, it’s expensive. Our group sat down for dinner and ordered bottle after bottle of water (they only serve bottled water, not tap) and our jaws dropped when we looked at the bill and found that our tasteless, seemingly cheap beverage choice actually cost us six euros per bottle!

HC Abroad: Goodbye, Chicago. Hello, Brussels!

1/5/2012

Hello, Collegiettes! My name is Lauren Omahen and soon I will be leaving my hometown of Chicago and spending my spring semester in the land of the European Union, breweries, and chocolatiers: Brussels!

Since you will be following me through my European adventures for the several months, I’ll take some time to introduce myself and explain the question many people have already asked, Why Brussels?

I’m currently a senior studying Magazine Journalism with a minor in Business at the University of Missouri- Columbia. I know what you’re thinking, studying abroad as a second-semester senior? Yes, it’s a little unconventional (but really, who wants to be conventional?).  I have been dreaming of studying abroad in a far away destination for years, but things always come up! I planned to study abroad Fall of 2011, but I was elected as Recruitment Director for my chapter, so my dreams of gallivanting around Europe quickly turned into dreams of recruitment clothing, party planning, and lots of glitter (not a bad gig, huh?)!

I’ve had an amazing time at Mizzou, and of course I’m going to miss my friends, but I’m ready to move on. Most people wish they could stay in college forever, but not this girl! I’m ready to explore Europe while I intern with Together Magazine (a European lifestyle magazine in Brussels) and then walk across the stage at graduation in May (cue tears, here). Then, after that, who knows? I’ll try my luck at one of the many fabulous magazines in New York City!

In the Spotlight: Mizzou Grad Molly Clodius Places Top Collegiate Vocalist in the Nation

3/24/2011

After years of performing and countless hours of practice, Molly, a graduate alum of Mizzou, won the MTNA Young Artist Award in 2010, which makes her the top collegiate vocalist in the nation. As she packs her bags for Chicago, she speaks with Her Campus Mizzou about her life in performance.

Her Campus Mizzou: When did you begin singing?
Molly Clodius: I started singing when I was pretty young. I started getting involved in school musicals around sixth grade and taking voice lessons around eighth grade. I started doing musicals in high schools in St. Louis, and then I went to Augustana College. That was when I started singing more classical and thinking about opera. I really didn't have opera on my mind until about junior year of high school when someone saw me performing and said, ‘Hey, you would be really good if you studied vocal performance (opera).’ I said, ‘Oh, you can do that?’ That’s where it all started for me.

HCM: What's your most memorable show?
MC: My most memorable show was Le Mis when I played Josette, the leading role. At that moment when you’re on stage, and everyone is looking at you, you really capture the entire audience’s attention. There is really no better feeling than that. The adrenaline is pumping. It’s kind of an addiction. The moments leading up to that can be terrifying and scary. You just want to pull your hair out, and then after is great, and you feel really good about it.
