Our Favorite Easy, Do-It-Yourself Beauty Products

11/20/2011

As girls, we want to look our best and have FUN in the process (cue the Cyndi Lauper background music). Each year, the beauty industry sucks up gazillions of our hard-earned dollars and often puts us through painful procedures (waxing, anyone?). Here are a few at-home recipes you can use to have fun, save money, and painlessly improve your look.

Lip Balm
Don’t know what to do with that little bit of lipstick left at the end of the tube? Turn them into tinted lip balm of course! You can choose your color, flavor, scent and container too. This project is great for you and as gifts for others.

Step 1:Choose a container or tin for your lip balm (old Altoids boxes are cute) and be sure to wash it in soap/hot water; let it dry completely.
Step 2:Ingredients: Two parts oil to one part beeswax. You can use any oil that you like (almond oil for added moisture, peppermint oil for a fresh scent, etc.)
Step 3:Melt the beeswax in a double boiler, ensuring that the top bowl does not touch the water. Once the wax melted, remove from heat. Add your oils and as much lipstick as you want (the more lipstick you use, the darker the color will be).
Step 4:Immediately pour the hot mixture into the desired tin. Let it cool overnight before using it on your lips.

Face Mask
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love face masks. They always leave me feeling refreshed (or embarrassed, if a roommate’s guest sees me… oops). Here are a variety of recipes you can try out made with easily available ingredients.

Sooner Cheerleader Kendal Moore

10/27/2011

Kendal Moore may be a full-fledged Sooner and an OU cheerleader now, but this Rockwall, TX native was raised a Longhorn. “I grew up being a UT fan because my dad was raised in Austin and we went to games often. I fell in love with OU when I came with a friend for a cheerleading audition.'

At least she made the right choice eventually. Kendal is a member of the Large Co-Ed squad and a junior public relations major, which seems fitting since she loves interacting with people. “I had been cheering since I was 10 and to have an opportunity to do what I love in front of 90,000 people every Saturday was exactly what I wanted,” said Kendal.

She spoke about the strenuous try-outs process, claiming it starts with two auditions with the veteran cheerleaders, waiting for an email invitation to tryouts, and then the official 3-day tryout with cuts throughout the weekend. “It was an intense process and I was lucky to make the practice team my first year with around 100 girls trying out,” said Kendal.

Remembering cheering at her first game, Kendal said, “I was so emotional during pregame I can’t even explain that feeling. It was my dream since I was little and I was living it, a moment I will never forget.”

Cheering at the Red River Rivalry was also an unforgettable highlight of Kendal’s career. She claims that the UT cheerleaders were nice girls, but that she hopes that the game will get continued play on the Longhorn Network.

One Day's Worth of Budget-Friendly Meals

10/25/2011

What I’ve found to be so simple yet, so challenging, in college is feeding myself. Gone are the times when healthy, Mom-cooked meals showed up on my dinner table, and now I find myself needing to find nourishment that won’t contribute to the Freshman –or, Senior-- 15 and doesn’t break the bank.
Here are some staples of mine that I want to share with HC girls who are looking for simple things to cook that beat McDonald’s in the nutrition department.

BREAKFAST/SNACK: No-bake granola balls
I’ve spent hours comparing countless granola bar boxes looking for the healthiest choice, until recently I discovered I can make my own! This is a great snack because it is easily customizable (for other picky eaters out there) and you don’t even need an oven.

Ingredients:
1 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup peanut butter (I use Smucker’s Natural Creamy)
1/3 cup honey
1 cup dried/toasted coconut flakes
1/2 cup shelled sunflower seeds
1/2 chocolate chips
1 tsp vanilla

Mix everything in a medium bowl until thoroughly incorporated.  Let chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Once chilled, roll into balls and enjoy!  Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 1 week.

Note: You can substitute anything for the dry items, such as dried cranberries/raisins, nuts, cereal etc… Likewise, you can leave anything out except for the peanut butter and honey because that’s what makes it all stick together. Feel free to go crazy with this one!

LUNCH/SNACK: Pasta salad
This one is so easy, it’s ridiculous, and it lasts all week!

Ingredients:
1 box spiral pasta (I use whole wheat pasta)
1 bottle Italian salad dressing (I use Great Value’s Lite Zesty Italian)

10 Ordinary Acts of Kindness to Make Someone's Day Extraordinary

10/12/2011

Here at Her Campus Oklahoma, we believe in the motto “do good, feel good.” There are so many small things you can do to make someone’s day or improve the community, so why not start now? Here are 10 day-brighteners that will make you, and someone else, feel great.

1. Give a stranger a compliment – I once made a friend on the first day of class because she said she liked my boots, which started a conversation about our mutual love of Steve Madden… It’s so easy to compliment someone, and it may even result in a friendship.

2. Post positively – Sure complaining on Facebook/Twitter can release frustrations, but try posting something positive instead, such as lyrics, quotes or something good that happened that day.

3. Buy someone a drink – Sure this works at bars to get the ladies, but I’m talking about hitting up 7Eleven and picking up a Big Gulp for your roommate. For a guaranteed smile, deliver 79 cents of pure happiness straight to their door.

4. Stay in touch – Text a friend you don’t see that often to let them know you’re thinking about them. I love when I get random texts from my high school gal pals!

5. Study buddy – Have a big test or paper coming up? Email your class and see if anyone needs a study partner. This has helped me make new friends and get better grades in the process, what is there to lose?

6. Pick up a piece of trash on campus – This is an easy way to keep OU beautiful and do your part.

Honor Society President Caroline Ward

9/29/2011

As the 2011-2012 Gamma Beta Phi President, Caroline Ward is not only a chem-whiz, but she is also dedicated to helping other students maintain good grades and get involved in the community. The Chemistry senior from Arlington, TX, first got involved with Gamma Beta Phi, a service organization requiring a GPA in OU's top 20 percent, at the end of her freshman year. She became a member and acted as chapter secretary before being elected GBP president for the 2011-12 term. "I enjoyed being the secretary, but felt that I could accomplish more with the organization by being president," Caroline said.

Caroline notes that while grades are important, members also volunteer around the Norman and Oklahoma City metro area. She stays busy attending all the GBP service events, as any presient should. Her plans for GBP this year focus on getting the attendance up at service events. "What's the point of being a GBP member if you don't participate? It's a service organization first," she said.

When asked what you do with a chemsitry degree, Caroline laughed and said, "what do you do with a chemistry degree anyway? I went down the pre-med road for a semester or two, then I realized that was not my calling." Caroline recently applied for the national program Teach for America and, if accepted, she hopes to teach math and/or science to inner-city students.

5 Websites Guaranteed to Satisfy Your Need to Procrastinate

9/26/2011

If you’re like most other college students, then you may have a desk job that doesn’t always keep you on your toes or a subconscious need to put off studying for that test until midnight the night before. Well you’re in luck, because in all the years I have spent procrastinating I have discovered multiple entertaining sites for delaying all means of productivity. Here is the compiled list:

1. Sporcle.com
Sporcle’s “mentally stimulating diversions” can provide hours of entertainment. The site offers categorized and timed trivia games about sports, movies, literature… you name it. If you have a secret nerdy interest (mine happens to be geography), then there is a quiz for you. Test your skills and learn something along the way (Sporcle tells you the right/missing answers, so you are never left in the dark). This site is particularly beneficial if you need to look busy, because you have to type in your answers… Semi-productive, right?
