The Little Europe of Humboldt County: NightStalkers

4/27/2012
“Instead of calling ourselves DJs, we try to be more like performers,” said Steven Martinez, an economics and graphic design student.

Martinez, a Southern California native, is one half of the electronic music duo NightStalkers. He met his collaborator Ryan Tombrello, a business and public relations student, in high school. Once Martinez and Tombrello discovered they would both be attending Humboldt State University for college, the pair agreed to team up to bring their spin on the electronic music scene to Arcata.

“Whenever we go out, we want to have a good time, [but then] you get there and find out there are a lot of things going on that really aren’t up to par,” Martinez says, “So we figured, why not have us be the host?”

Editor's Picks: Our Favorite Recipes

Inviting your sweetheart over for a homecooked meal? Planning a dinner party with your roommates? Heading to a sorority potluck? You'll need something to make, right? The editors of HC Humboldt are here to help you out with their favorite recipes!

Zoe Berman, Editor-in-Chief: My go-to dish is chicken pesto pasta. It’s super easy and super delicious. The best part is that it is so yummy, everyone will think you spent hours slaving away over a hot stove to make it. I’ve definitely impressed a few men with my cooking skills with this one!

Our Spring Break!

3/21/2012

Our writers traveled all over the nation for spring break. We headed north to Portland, Ore., south to Death Valley, Calif., and all the way to the East Coast in New York City!

HC Business Manager and writer Vanessa Gonsalves spent her Spring Break in Las Vegas, Nev. with her boyfriend Jacob Stadtfeld. Their adventures in Las Vegas included a night out on the strip, laying by the pool and a visit to the Hoover Dam! The DJ pair known as "Miss and Mister " also attended and DJ'd at Gonsalves's aunt's wedding. | Photo provided by Vanessa Gonsalves

Events Editor Shareen McFall went to the USC University Village 3 theater with her family to watch The Lorax. "My mother used to read this book to me when I was a child," McFall said, "I had to take my book with me to the theater! It was a great movie, Dr. Seuss is the best!" | Photo provided by Shareen McFall

This brilliant Parrot and seven other attention grabbing friends were a major attraction at the Santa Monica Pier over break. Calendar Editor Shareen McFall was intimidated by the Parrot's strong beak so she cautiously admired its beauty from a distance. | Shareen McFall

Editor's Picks: Our Favorite Nail Polishes

2/23/2012

A good manicure might be a Collegiette’s best accessory, but can you find the color that suits you best? Are you partial to purple or are you mad for mint? Do you go gaga for glitter or do you look ravishing in red? The editors here at HC Humboldt share our favorite hues with you!

Zoe Berman, Editor-in-Chief: Sally Hansen - Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear: Mint Sorbet
I got a ton of compliments on this color! I usually go for pinks, but I really loved this cool minty shade. It was a great compliment to all my outfits, whether I was wearing my comfy coral t-shirt or my favorite bright green dress! The polish went on really easily and I only needed two coats. I made this mistake of painting my nails right before bed, but the polish dried surprisingly quick and wasn’t messed up at all in the morning! My manicure didn’t chip until I got bored at work and started picking it off... oops!

Jacks Go Green!

2/12/2012

Eco-friendly is Humboldt State’s middle name.

The university actively participates in environmentally friendly activities and organizations. In December, the Waste Reduction and Resource Awareness Program, more commonly known as WRRAP, Environmental Health and Safety, and Plant Operations sponsored an event on campus that allowed students, faculty, and staff to recycle their used electronics or “E-Waste”.  HSU placed first among NCAA Division II schools in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Game Day Challenge for 2011. HSU won the competition because we eliminated the most amount of trash generated at football games. WRRAP is also to thank for establishing programs such as R.O.S.E., the Reusable Office Supply Exchange, and Take Back the Tap, which promotes waste reduction through the use of tap water over bottled water.

So how do we take our environmental efforts to the next level? RECYLEMANIA!
