The Sweet Side of Business: Sweet Treats Cosmetics

1/26/2012

Bentley collegiettes™ are known for their drive for success in the business world. While many of us have our eyes on the corporate world, there is a whole other world of entrepreneurs who are hitting the internet for success. Katie Abdou is one such lady.

Craft goddess and baking enthusiast Katie Abdou, 25, of Pembroke, MA launched her online mineral makeup company in June of 2011. Originally, she had planned to make cosmetics for young girls, such as flavored lip gloss and scented nail polish. However, her friend was interested in a similar company, focusing on mineral eye shadow. The two friends combined forces. However, it was not long before differences of opinion got in the way and the company was split, leaving Katie to start from scratch. She took this as an opportunity to form to a company completely in her own vision, expanding her product line beyond simply eye shadow and lip gloss, but to include other cosmetics as well. Thus, Sweet Treats Cosmetics was formed.

STC specializes in mineral makeup, featuring eye shadow, blush, and lip gloss, in a wide variety of colors, or “flavors,” named for all of your favorite desserts. Katie’s playful spirit spills into her product, conjuring up many bold and sparkly varieties. Many of her products are vegan-friendly and all are made with safe ingredients.

PRIDE and the Women's Center host Alex Pangborn

11/21/2011

LGBTQ has become a common acronym throughout today’s media. While many people struggle to remember the designated identities of the acronym (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual/transgender, questioning/queer), those that do understand the community may not have a connection to each of the letters represented. For Gender Studies Students, PRIDE and Women’s Center members, and others, Thursday, November 10th eradicated this lack of connection with the introduction of Alex Pangborn.

Alex is a female-to-male (FTM) transgender person who has visited Bentley for several years, speaking about his experiences. Most people do not think twice about their “junk.” However, transgender individuals often feel a disconnect between the gender that they are born into and the gender they feel they truly are. This can be an extremely uncomfortable experience for such individuals. As Alex explained, many people do not have the language to explain what they are feeling. Our society is fixated on penis=boy/ vagina=girl that it is rarely considered that someone with a penis could feel like a girl and vice versa.

Through his conversation in the classroom and in the more casual atmosphere of a PRIDE/Women’s Center joint discussion group, Alex provided insight through his development and discovery of finding an identity that really felt right for him.

Waltham's Best Restaurants

11/12/2011

While Waltham is known for its vast array of restaurants, few students have the opportunity to explore the cuisine the area has to offer. Once students receive the privilege of car on campus, they often remain in “take-out mode” or stick to steadfast favorites and chains.

However, for those Collegiettes™ looking for something different, we scoped out some of the hot spots for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Watch City:

John Brewer’s Tavern

John’s Brewer’s is the perfect place if you are looking for a hearty meal. The colonial-style tavern features a large bar area, as well as a vast dining area. The burgers and sandwiches are always piled high with meat and other toppings. Make sure to try the buffalo wings. A double plate will feed two for a late lunch and fill you up for the rest of the day. The chicken is fresh and coated in sauce without the greasy, fried batter that can break a good wing. John Brewer’s also features meals that will remind you of home including meatloaf and turkey dinner.
