Lose the Freshman 15: First Weigh-In & Making Goals

Hey guys,

Today is the first Monday weigh-in that I’ve done so far. I thought it would be horrible. I was convinced that after my terrible morning I would step on the scale and my weight would be much higher than it was when I started, cause that would only be the cherry on the top of my day.

I walked into the locker room, eyes cast down on the floor, attempting to avoid looking at the naked women walking around. As I made my way towards the back, I hoped, no I prayed that I would be able to walk out with my head held high. I pulled off my pants and slipped into my shorts, apparently I had to weigh myself in “airport security attire” for the DietBet. With my bcf, best crazy friend, in tow, I trudged towards the bathroom where the scale was held. Dun Dun DUNNNNNNN…

The scale was one of the old kinds that you still found at the doctor’s office or at New York Sports Club locker rooms. There were two bars, one in increments of ¼ of a pound and the other in 50 pounds. I immediately moved the weight on the 50 pound bar to 150 and slowly started to slide the smaller weight away from zero. 3 pounds, 7 pounds, there goes 10. My heart beat faster as I slowed my fingers. It was balanced. I took a deep breath and looked at the numbers before me… Dun Dun DUNNNNNNNNNNNNN…

My weight is 162.5. Since I started at 166.5 pounds, I’ve lost 4 pounds in the last week. I’m very proud of myself. If I hadn’t started this a week ago, I wouldn’t be 4 pounds lighter. I know I still have a lot to go to reach my goal of 120 but at least I can take 4 pounds of the weight I need to lose.

I think having goals, especially when it comes to your health, is a great thing. My most important goals right now are running a 5K (which is a little over 3 miles), winning the DietBet, and losing 42.5 pounds before the school year ends. All of that might sound really hard right now, but that’s because it is. The Best Foot Forward 5K is on the 21st of April so I’m excited to start training for it. It’s also for charity so while I’m running I’ll feel great cause I’m making a difference to kids who need shoes.

Doing a race is a great way to get yourself motivated to go to the gym. Most of the time you’ll have to pay a small fee but when you think of all the benefits it gives you, it’s so worth it

  • forces you to go to the gym
  • that day your workout will be a quick run
  • you’ll be able to run with others who enjoy running so you’ll do even better
  • um… there might be food (I like food)
  • I get a t-shirt when I pre-enroll (I wish Cornell gave me a t-shirt everytime I did pre-enroll)

What goals do you guys have? Remember, while goals and your weight are important, don’t kill yourself over them. Don’t go super crazy hard working out and deprive yourself from having fun with friends, and don’t think that being healthy means you can’t have that cookie every now and then. Remember what Hannah Montana said, it’s the “BEST OF BOTH WORLDS”!!!

Don’t judge me, I love Hannah and Miley.

PS. don’t forget that today’s the last day to register for the DietBet, where you have 4 weeks to lose 4% of your body weight!!!
