This YouTuber Created a Gorgeous Prom Dress from a $4 Thrift Store Find

The prom years may be behind us, but any extravagant occasion coming our way deserves an equally extravagant dress to wear. But a hefty price tag doesn’t have to come with a beautiful gown according to Amber Scholl, who made her own dress from a thrift store. The 24-year-old YouTuber put up a video tutorial on how she took a $4 dress and upcycled it into the prom dress of her dreams.

Essentially, Scholl bought a plain, short black dress at Good Will, then proceeded to stitch the skirt of the dress for a tighter fit. She then went to town with black feather fabric and crystal overlays (which costs a lot more than $4, so disclaimer: It didn’t actually cost only $4 to make this). The end result was stunning, with a new black dress that had a dramatic feather skirt and train, crystal bodice, and matching crystal neckpiece.

“I knew I could turn [the dress] into something fabulous! I love a blank canvas because I can just see the possibilities so clearly in my head when I look at something,” Scholl told Yahoo Lifestyle. Even though the supplies took some serious spending, overall this dress cost significantly less than what you’d pay for something similar at a department store or boutique. The internet couldn’t get enough of the DIY masterpiece, with the tweet about her creation earning more than 130,000 likes and her YouTube tutorial trending worldwide.

The dress was a hit not only for its affordability, but also its customization! You can make something truly unique on your own for less money AND no one will ever have the same dress as you. Scholl certainly changed the fancy gown game and we’re excited to see what other amazing pieces can arise when you get budget-friendly and creative with your style choices!
