The Kitty Cut Hairstyle Is Bound To Take Over Your TikTok FYP This Year

If you were worried about animal-themed cuts losing their momentum in 2024, fear not. Over the last few years, we’ve seen the birth of the wolf cut, butterfly cut, fox cut, cub cut, and jellyfish cut. At this point, I’m convinced any hairstyle with layers has the potential to be named after an animal or insect. And now, enter the kitty cut.

Fashion sources like Glamour, PopSugar, Stylist, and more have already declared the kitty cut the 2024 hair trend. Who What Wear recently shared a TikTok on the rising popularity of this tousled haircut. It looks like layers and animal-themed names aren’t going away anytime soon.

The kitty cut is basically a shoulder-length version of the wolf cut with less bangs than the cub cut. Like the wolf cut, the kitty cut has a carefree and edgy look to it. Complete with long layers and face-framing curtain bangs, this haircut is designed to make you feel cool and confident. So far, this cut has mostly been shown on straightened hair. YouTuber Styles by Summer calls this style the “best cut for fine hair.” However, as a curly-haired girl myself, I think this trend could work on thicker curls as long as the layers are cut carefully and taken one curl at a time.

One user on TikTok achieved the kitty cut by tying her hair at her chin and cutting straight across. She then diagonally cut her curtain bangs near her cheekbones and took smaller sections of her hair around her face to begin adding some long layers. As a finishing touch, she used a blowout round brush to style her hair. It turned out amazing! So, if you’re brave enough, this is a cut you can theoretically try at home. There’s already a few videos on YouTube with step-by-step instructions on how to do the kitty cut. Me, on the other hand? I’m way too chicken to cut my own hair. Scheduling an appointment at the salon is a much safer option for me.

Celebrities are already donning this carefree cut, too, from Laura Harrier to Jennifer Aniston at the 2024 Golden Globes. However, some people aren’t impressed with the kitty cut. One user on Who What Wear’s TikTok commented, “This is just the awkward stage of growing out a short haircut,” with another writing, “Stop giving haircuts stupid names!!!!”

I think this cut is purrr-fect (I’m sorry). I’m excited to see more people give the kitty cut a try this year. Whether you get it done at the salon or do it yourself, the kitty cut is bound to add a lot to your style.
