From a young age, we’ve been taught that it is what’s on the inside that counts. In a twist of irony, the rule especially bodes true for your appearance. Beauty is an outer manifestation of inner vitality that is bolstered by good health and nutrition. The editors over at Women’s Health magazine shared the secrets of beauty nutrition with Her Campus, so just read on for their delicious food picks to capture glowing hair, skin, and nails.

Dark Chocolate: The sweet stuff contains high levels of potent antioxidants that protect your skin from sun damage as well as amp up blood flow to your tissues, which nourishes & illuminates your complexion. To get the most antioxidant bang for your buck, find chocolate that is at least 70 percent cacao.

Spinach: A powerhouse of vital nutrients and vitamin A, these leafy greens help fight inflammation and wrinkles. It’s also loaded with an antioxidant called lutein that supplies a healthy, bright-eyed look.

Tomatoes: Whether this fruit is sliced, diced or stewed, it helps protect against damage from the sun and other environmental factors thanks to its key ingredient, the antioxidant lycopene. You can eat one serving of tomatoes a day with a drizzle of olive oil, a splash of vinaigrette or a slice of avocado.

Edamame: This soy bean can ease inflammation and stave off collagen breakdown, leaving skin smoother and more even-toned. Toss half a cup of boiled edamame into a salad or a pasta dish; one serving per day is both safe and beneficial.

Walnuts: Eating just one ounce of walnuts by themselves or in your salad will supply you with your daily dose of nutrients that are responsible for smoother skin, healthier hair and stronger bones. Nosh on walnuts before a big test and you may experience another benefit: improved mental faculties. The flavonoids and vitamin E found in walnuts actually aid in the destruction of harmful free radicals  to keep your beautiful mind sharp. Other top nuts include pistachios, almonds and hazelnuts.
