Earth Lovers: LET’S DO THIS.

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

Helllooooooo earth lovers! Hi! I’m Melanie, and I’m super stoked to start tackling the Three-Minute Shower Challenge. I have to admit—I was a bit skeptical when first heard about this proposal (ONLY THREE MINUTES to take a shower?!?—Is that even possible??), but after timing myself a few times and figuring out how to simplify my shower routine, I think I’m starting to figure out little by little how to easily conserve water and help make a happier planet.

IMG 0526I’m currently a sophomore at Johns Hopkins University, but I’m originally from Southern California, so, of course, I’m in love with the beach. Wait. Scratch that. I’m obsessed with the beach. And the ocean. I’m pretty sure I’d be perfectly content if all I had to do in life is lie on sandy shores and explore sea life all day long. I’d love for our beautiful beaches to stay clean an enjoyable forever—which is part of the reason I’m partaking in the Three-Minute Shower Challenge. Growing up, I was always bombarded with water conservation information and environmental awareness facts. Everyone tries to make a huge effort to keep our beaches in tip-top condition. And, even though we’re right on the Pacific Ocean, California relies on many outside sources for the freshwater supplies that we need to live—and the less people waste, the less water we need to borrow from everyone else.

Because of my prior water conservation knowledge, I’ve always been aware of doing what I can to help our environment. I always recycle, and I don’t let water run when I’m washing dishes or brushing my teeth (almost always). And so, when I heard about the Three-Minute Shower Challenge, I thought, “Why not? I’m always up for a challenge…and I’ll be helping save the environment!”

Now, don’t get me wrong—this doesn’t mean that I’m going to compromise my beauty regimen (believe me, I’m always up for looking my best), but this does mean that I’m going to be making smarter choices. Even after just a few days of taking shorter showers, I’ve become more aware of conserving resources in little everyday choices to make our world a better place.

So join me in taking the Three-Minute Shower Challenge! Because when people do good, they feel good. And when we feel good, we feel like doing good. And I’m all for a better, happier planet. Here’s to making today into a better tomorrow!

xoxo

Think you can take only three-minute showers for the rest of the month? Or is there absolutely no way you can cut it shorter than ten? What are you’re thoughts on the challenge? Leave a comment below or email (at melanieshimano@jhu.edu), or give me a shout-out on twitter telling me how YOU are going to go about conserving water this Earth Month!

Melanie Shimano (Johns Hopkins University, '13) is a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering major originally from Orange County, California. She is currently involved in research at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and also spends her time with various on-campus groups including her sorority (Phi Mu!), Jaywalk Dance Team, and AIChE/SBE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers/Society for Biological Engineers). When she's not busy with school, some of her favorite things to do are shopping, hanging out with friends, and eating sprinkles cupcakes. And she definitely looks forward to going to the beach when she visits back home during breaks since it rains in Balitmore almost every day (but she still loves Hopkins).
