Not sure if you can pull off mixed prints this fall without looking like you got dressed in the dark? Here are a few tips on how to make this Dries Van Noten-inspired trend look not only intentional, but chic as well!

1. Same print mixing

What better way to established some cohesiveness in your outfit than by mixing the same prints, like leopard and leopard, or floral and floral? Pair a larger print with a smaller one so your look doesn’t appear too busy.

2. Mixing prints with same color palette

When your choose different prints that are part of the same color family, you can’t go wrong! By selecting like-color pieces, you can go bold with your prints without having to worry about clashing colors.

3. Prints with shared color

The simplest formula for matching pieces: select prints with a matching color within them. Just don’t go overboard with the matchy-matchy effect – select prints that are different enough to appear deliberately clashy.

4. Treat stripes as neutral

A rule of thumb when it comes to mixing prints: a simple striped pattern can always be treated like a neutral color. Experiment with pairing your stripes with floral prints, polka dots, or even a bolder striped pattern.

5. Bi-color patterns

For a bold effect with a simple color palette, select prints that only involve a single color. Just make sure the color distinction is clear enough to make your bi-color pairing look intentional.

6. Large scale with small scale

Pair a simple, muted pattern with a bolder patterned print. Feel free to make your bold print as loud as you dare!
