While we’re excited to return to our perennial spring favorites – sundresses and sandals – there are a few trends from the past that aren’t as likely to return any time soon. (Crimped hair and palazzo pants, we are so glad to leave you behind.) But not all trends from the past deserve to stay in the grave. Read on for the nine trends we’d love to see make a comeback in 2013.

1. Overalls

You probably wore overalls as a kid and haven’t thought about them since, but give them a second chance. Jumpsuits and rompers have been gaining traction for a few years now, so it’s only a matter of time before their denim counterpart makes a comeback. Overalls fit right into the grunge look that’s all over runways this year. Try rolling up the cuffs and wearing a crop top underneath for a look that’s decidedly appropriate for 2013. While you might have left one shoulder unsnapped back in the day, that look is a little too dated to pull off now unless you’re at a theme party.

2. Tattoo chokers

Before you dismiss this ’90s staple, let me warn you: I saw a girl wearing a tattoo choker in the library last week. The ‘90s are storming the fashion scene in a big way – we can only hope this particular trend will make a comeback, too. I wore one of these in nearly every photo in my family photo album from the late ’90s and early 2000s. Isn’t it time to update the trend for the age of Instagram? With 50 Shades of Grey mania hitting an all-time high this year as the movie begins production this year or next, this boudoir-inspired trend could seriously take off. Try topping your favorite going-out dress or a lacy tank with a choker for a night out; the jewelry will draw the eye to your lovely face.

3. Headscarves

We love this vintage photo of Audrey Hepburn, but it wouldn’t be the same without her totally glam headscarf. Next time you want to channel the famous ’60s glamour girl, skip the LBD and pearls – the headscarf and oversized sunglasses combo is where it’s at. We wish this look would come back ASAP!

4. Zig-zag parts

Be still, my ’90s heart! A zig-zag part in elementary school meant that you were on your way to sitting at the popular girls’ table. Ashley Greene rocked a more subtle version of this look a few years ago. A zig-zag that avoids super-sharp, straight lines and perfect angles is the easiest way to update this trend. Are you game to try it? Use something narrow and sharp, like the end of a teasing comb or even a pencil, to draw out your design. Start from your hairline and work your way back to the crown of your head. Don’t worry about every hair falling into place – a little messiness keeps the look cool.

5. Clogs

Clogs made a brief comeback a few summers ago, but fizzled out before the trend could take hold. The Swedish import is adorable and we think it should stick around for another summer, ja? If you still have a pair of clogs kicking around in your closet from the trend’s last revival, try pairing them with a bright dress for the ultimate summery vibe. Flat clogs are a little dated, so try a pair with a bit of a heel.

6. Headbands

You were hard-pressed to find a high school or college girl not sporting a headband in the late 2000s. But as soon as Blair Waldorf went to NYU and ditched her headbands, the trend largely fell off the radar. It’s a shame, because these cute toppers were a stylish, inexpensive way to finish off any outfit. It’s only been a few short years, but it’s time for this trend to come back!

7. Beehive

When it comes to retro hairstyles, there’s no better choice than the beehive. While it may be tricky to master, it’s worth the effort! If you’re a sucker for old-fashioned glamour, be bold and throw your hair up in a beehive for class one day and let the Audrey Hepburn comparisons come rolling in.

8. Gloves

Mad Men‘s Betty Draper may have some less-than-aspirational qualities (manipulation, self-centeredness, and chain smoking, just to name a few), but she’s always properly dressed. We adore her little white gloves. How fabulous would it be to bring gloves back for special occasions?

9. Dressing up for dinner

What ever happened to dressing up for dinner? Downton Abbey reminds us of how grand it looks. In one episode, Lord Grantham shows up for a white tie dinner in merely black tie attire. He’s immediately reprimanded by the Dowager, “You look dressed for a barbecue!” Ah, if only boys in the dining hall dressed like Lord Grantham. We’d even settle for black tie.

Which of these trends should come back? Which should stay in the history books for good?
