Coconut Oil Fixes Everything

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at York U chapter.

I’m a huge fan of coconuts. They taste amazing and smell like a tropical beach. Coconut oil, specifically, has a really special place in my heart. Not only does its tropical scent remind me of warm sunny days on the beach in Hawaii, it’s antibacterial and health properties make for great cosmetic use.  I basically use this stuff for everything. I use it in my hair once a week as part of a hair mask used to keep my hair healthy, and I use it on my skin after shaving, making my legs smooth and soft. Once and a while I’ll even cook with it or spread it on my toast. Yeah, seriously.

There are so many benefits to using organic virgin coconut oil, and if you’re not using it right now you’re missing out. Here are some ways you can incorporate this all-natural multi-use product into your daily life:

Put it in your hair

To give your hair a little extra treatment, get some coconut oil and spread it into your wet hair. The coconut oil moisturizes your scalp and hair, preventing dandruff and mends any split ends that you have. This keeps your hair healthy and strong. Because it is comprised of medium-chain fatty acids, the oil penetrates more deeply and faster than any hair conditioner. Not only is it amazing for your hair but you will be able to instantly see and feel the benefits when you wash it in the morning. Your hair will never look shinier or feel softer!

Put it on your skin

Coconut oil is used in many natural beauty products for skin care. It’s antibacterial and antifungal and an excellent moisturizer. After getting out of the shower, slather that coconut oil all over your skin. Coconut oil makes a great body lotion. It will lock in moisture and it smells amazing. You can also mix equal parts coconut oil and sugar to make an all-natural homemade exfoliating body scrub. Furthermore, it is a great alternative to shaving cream as well: it keeps your skin moisturized and prevents razor burn. You can also use coconut oil on your face and lips before putting on makeup for added moisture. Aside from its moisturizing benefits, coconut oil also makes a great makeup remover. It gets all your makeup off in one swipe because the oil breaks up the makeup. Just put a bit of coconut oil on a cotton pad and wipe away.

Eat it!

There are over 1500 studies, which prove that coconut oil is one of the healthiest foods in the world. Coconut oil is high in natural saturated fats. These fats not only increase the amount of healthy cholesterol in your body but also helps to convert the “bad” cholesterol into good cholesterols, resulting in a healthier heart. In addition to this, consuming coconut oil boosts your metabolism, improves your digestion, and burns body fat faster. It’s legitimately miraculous. Health professionals recommend taking 2-3 tablespoons daily to acquire its full health benefits. Here are some of the ways you can eat coconut oil:

  • Use it as a substitute for butter
  • Cook with it instead of using olive oil/vegetable oil
  • Put coconut oil in your smoothie
  • Mix it in with your yogurt or oatmeal
  • Just eat it by the spoonful

Coconuts are amazing and can be used for just about any problem you have. Rub it on your skin, your hair, your relationships, your bank Account, and the rest of your life. Really, anywhere you need it. It’s good for anything and everything. Seriously. Anything. Try it out!

Hey! I'm Stephanie Wilcox, and I am a professional writing major here at York U! I spend most of my time playing piano or ukulele and crying over books and boybands. I'm currently studying Korean as an elective, and I hope to do plenty of travelling after I graduate. I believe in fighting for a better, safer, and more equal future, especially through words and writing. This is my third year at York University, and I am thrilled to begin writing with Her Campus this year as a CC and seeing the impact we will be making here!
