How to be Eco Friendly Today

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

With all the terrible things happening to our environment, small changes can help. Since I’ve started learning about the Zero Waste Community, I’ve found that there always seems to be a multitude of things you can change. However, it’s not always easy to make these changes, and not cheap either.

Here’s a list of easy (even free!) tips you can do to help the world, a little at a time.

  1. Ask for no straw in your drink.

  2. Don’t forget your reusable water bottle/cup.

  3. Turn down free promotional items. Especially if you know you don’t need it.

  4. Go to the library instead of Barnes & Noble.

  5. Donate unused items in good condition.

  6. Try to buy second-hand first.

  7. Swap your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo toothbrush.

  8. Buy food without packaging or minimal packaging.

  9. Try layers before turning up the heat.

  10. Try opening the window, instead of turning on the AC.

  11. Stop impulse buying!

  12. Unplug electronics when not in use.

  13. Ask for no plastic or reused packaging materials for online orders.

  14. Reduce your meat consumption. Meatless Monday? Or how about Vegan Monday?

  15. Use a cloth napkin, instead of paper.

  16. Swap cotton pads for reusable rounds.

  17. Switch from a plastic disposable razor to a metal safety razor.

  18. Wash your clothes in cold water when possible.

  19. Pick up litter when you’re out and dispose of it properly.

  20. Go paperless for your bills!
