An Open Letter to My Mom

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Dear Mom,

In honor of Women’s History Month, I want to recognize you for the being the strongest, most intelligent, supportive, and empowering woman in my life. From the moment I entered this world, you devoted all of your existence to caring for all of my needs, big and small. You continued to guide me throughout my adolescent years as I slowly began the journey of self-discovery. As I made my way through middle school, you stood by me through the many trials and tribulations. Your patience never ceased and your kindness only continued to blossom, even through the most devastating disagreements. Just a few years later I transitioned into high school. You constantly encouraged me to seek out new opportunities and experiences that would allow me to grow in all aspects of my life. Mom, I will never forget the incredible feeling that filled my heart when I saw you in the stands or sitting on the sideline cheering me on! That sense of joy is truly indescribable. Now, I’m in college working toward a scary future called adulthood. I am slowly discovering myself and growing to become the person I want to become—and that person is you.

Mom, I want to take a moment to thank you. Thank you for loving me when I was unlovable. Thank you for supporting me when I was trapped in isolation. Thank you for encouraging me to pursue my dreams and reach them, by whatever means necessary. Thank you for providing me with the best advice for every situation. Thank you for always knowing when to speak and when to sit in silence. Thank you for instilling in me a love for family. Thank you for forcing me to experience new things outside of my comfort zone. Thank you for encouraging me to meet new people. Thank you for opening my mind to new perspectives and belief systems. Thank you for teaching me to love others unconditionally. Thank you for being the incredible woman you are. Thank you for always finding a way to put a smile on your face. Thank you for making me laugh. Thank you for being my life-long best friend. Thank you, Mom, for being my hero.

“I believe this with all of my heart: The greatest coach of all time in my eyes is my mom. She’s instilled in me toughness and a perseverance and just a never-quit mentality, and I thank her every day for providing me, for what she sacrificed her life for.” –Scott Brooks

All my love,

Your daughter
