The Emotional Stages of Being Sick in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Being sick is bad enough, but being sick when you’re on your own at school is even worse. We’ve all been there, and if you haven’t, consider yourself one of the lucky ones (or next).

Anxious

You can feel the sickness coming. You aren’t quite ill yet, but you know it’s about to go down.

Denial

This isn’t that bad. It’s just a cold. You’ll be able to bounce back after a couple glasses of orange juice and a nap.

Scared

Maybe you really are sick? How will you be able to live your life normally for the next week?

Acceptance

This is it. You really are sick. *sighs heavily* *coughs violently*

Self-Pity

Life may never be the same again. This is it.

Hope

You’ve successfully only coughed 17 times in your 50-minute class. Progress.

Grateful

You would like to thank modern medicine, Puffs Tissues that smell like Vicks, and your closest friends for nursing you back to health.

Just a small town girl living in an even smaller college town. I'm an Accounting major at WVWC in hopes of someday going to law school. I enjoy coffee, jumping in puddles, & petting the locals' dogs when they take them for walks on campus.
