Anne Harman ’14: President of Alpha Xi Delta

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

For Anne Harman, being the president of her sorority wasn’t just for her to gain leadership skills—it was to give back.

“I am very passionate about our sisterhood, and Alpha Xi Delta has impacted my life in an incredible way,” Harman said. “I saw being president as a great way to give back to the sorority that has already given so much to me.”

Harman, 20, of Morgantown, West Virginia, is a psychology major with minors in business and history. She joined Alpha Xi Delta in 2011, during the spring semester of her freshman year. Before being elected president, she held the positions of Panhellenic Delegate, Corresponding Secretary, and Annual Progress Report Chair. For Harman, the pull to join the chapter started almost as soon as she stepped foot on the Wesleyan campus.

“As a freshman, I quickly noticed that the sisters of Alpha Xi Delta were extremely genuine and close to each other,” Harman said. “I felt right at home while in the Xi suite. I knew I had found the right sisterhood for me.”

This no-nonsense, certain attitude also reflects itself in Harman’s presidential philosophy.

“I don’t have any fears about my presidential term,” Harman said. “However, there are some challenges that come with any position with such responsibility. One of the biggest challenges is doing what’s best for the sorority throughout the year, while at the same time seeing us continue to grow.”

Harman’s passion for her sorority and its philanthropic endeavors is exceedingly evident when discussing Autism Speaks, the sorority’s national philanthropy. It is within this cause that she really shows her love for service and helping others, those within her chapter and outside of it.

“I am very interested in Autism Speaks,” Harman said. “I have volunteered with a lot of people who have autism through On Eagles Wings’ Therapeutic Horsemanship Center over the past five summers, and I wanted to still be able to help while at school. My biggest hope for the chapter is that we can grow in our involvement and support of Autism Speaks.”

Harman is a born leader, as she is someone who is calm, composed, and cares immensely for both her sisters and those in need. Her hopes for the upcoming year are simple: keep the chapter strong, and keep assisting those that need it the most.

With a level head on her shoulders, an obvious passion for chapter unity, growth, and philanthropic endeavors, it seems that Harman will be able to succeed in all that she has stated, and even more, by year’s end.
