Meet WVU News Anchor, Dave Carl!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Name: Dave Carl
Major: Senior Broadcast Journalism
Highlights: 2011 Fall Semester Main Anchor for WVU News and “Feedback” director for U92 F.M.

Q: Why did you want to major in broadcast journalism?

A: “I was raised on sports on baseball, on soccer, on hockey, on football and basketball.  I saw those guys that were doing the games on ESPN or on ABC’s “Wide World of Sports and I really looked up to them.”

Q: What made you decided to pursue that major here at WVU?

A: “WVU is a great place, it’s an awesome place to be.  Not to mention the fact that the journalism program is number two in the country.  We have the top rated college broadcast news station in the country and being main anchor for that is pretty cool.”

Q: What surprised you about WVU?

A: “I was accepted into WVU but I never visited the campus.  I came with the incoming freshman visit and I fell in love with the campus.  The college radio station was something that I saw and really wanted to do. I really liked the Mountain Lair and the the football stadium was really cool.  I took advantage of all the opportunities that I wanted to.”

Q: What has been the proudest moment for you as a student?

A: “One of these magazines had the “Best of Morgantown” issue, and U92 (Radio Station) won…over WVAQ, over CLG, over all of the commercial radio stations.  A student-run radio station that I work at and I’m proud to say that I’m a director at that I love. I love that station and we won best radio station in Morgantown. That’s pretty awesome and I’m really proud of that.”

Q: What have you learned while pursuing your career as a journalist?

A: “Procrastination doesn’t particularly pay off.  Hard work and time management I think are the two biggest things I’ve learned from WVU News.”

Q:  What advice can you offer students who are starting out in college?

A:  “Take advantage of all of the opportunities you have.  If you want to get somewhere in this business you need to work hard and take advantage of all the opportunities that are presented to you.”
