Destructive School Spirit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

At West Virginia University, couch burning has always been a past time. Now that they have entered into the Big 12, the situation is getting worse. After West Virginia University won against Baylor (70-63) there were multiple couch burnings and three cars exploded on Cass Street. They still have not yet found the contributors to this, but there is $7,000 reward if you let law enforcement know. After the win against Texas (48-45) it’s surprising that the campus is still standing in some areas. Thousands of people flooded High Street, and Sunnyside area. There was a reported 24 street fires and 11 dumpster fires. A mountain line bus was also pushed over, along with a streetlight being knocked down and burned. There were multiple riots that law enforcement came to guarded with facemasks and batons. Law enforcement used pepper spray, and this dispersed the crowds. Although some may see this as school spirit, it’s becoming very destructive. Administrators and officials are contemplating making a student fee for more cops in Morgantown, which will increase the school’s tuition. West Virginia is notorious for various past time traditions, but there may be a point when enough is enough.
