Marvel Comics

1. Teasers for All-New Marvel Now

All-New Marvel Now, the follow up to last year’s “Marvel Now,” was introduced to the public with a series of cryptic one-word teasers. Each teaser is connected to an All-New Marvel Now title or story arc, and we’ve got it all set out for you.

  • Assassin – Elektra

The connection here is a pretty obvious one – Elektra Natchios, of Daredevil fame, is a ninja assassin, and we’re pretty pumped that she’s getting her own book (written by Zeb Wells with art by Mike del Mundo).

  • Atonement – Black Widow

“I’ve got red in my ledger, and I’d like to wipe it out.” Looks like Black Widow is finally trying to atone for her past sins, following in the footsteps of her movie doppelganger. With story by Nathan Edmondson and art by Phil Noto, this will be a book you don’t want to miss.

  • Corporate – All-New X-Factor

Marvel is relaunching All-New X-Factor with an all-new cast of characters: Polaris, Quicksilver, and Gambit (whose solo book was unfortunately cancelled earlier this year), as well as a few other characters who will be revealed later on. The “corporate” tie comes from Serval Industries, which will be funding the team.

  • Defend – Iron Patriot

This red-white-and-blue teaser was an obvious nod to James “Rhodey” Rhodes. His character in Iron Man 3 donned the infamous Iron Patriot armor, which carried over into the Secret Avengers comic. This new solo book will show Rhodey as his own hero, not just an Iron Man wannabe.

  • Descent – Avengers Underground

In the aftermath of Avengers Arena, this new book takes the survivors of Murder World into the Avengers Underground, an all-new adventure featuring, perhaps, a descent into potential villainy.

  • Extinction – Avengers A.I.

This teaser for the new arc of Avengers A.I. refers to the extinction of the human race in  a story that will span 10,000 years, when man will finally be replaced by machine.

  • Frenemies – Secret Avengers

This is the teaser for the upcoming Secret Avengers reboot. The new team will feature Hawkeye, Black Widow, Spider-Woman, Nick Fury (Jr.), and Phil Coulson.

  • Global – Avengers World

In this new series, the Avengers will be going global, taking on the responsibility of serving as protectors for all of planet earth.

  • Higher – Captain Marvel

Higher, faster, further, more.” This relaunch of Kelly Sue Deconnick’s Captain Marvel title will follow Carol Danvers in the aftermath of her memory loss. The rebooted series will also be more cosmic in nature, following Captain Marvel’s role in the Infinity event.

  • Hunted – Punisher

This new series will take Punisher from the Big Apple, moving him all the way to Los Angeles.

  • Judgment – Guardians of the Galaxy

This teaser refers to a crossover event with All-New X-Men, wherein the Shi’ar kidnap Jean Grey, putting her on trial for her crimes. It can only be assumed that the GotG will have a role in her judgment.

  • Mindbubble – Captain America

This new arc of the Captain America series features Dr. Mindbubble as its Big Bad.

  • Overdrive – Ghost Rider

A new Ghost Rider series is being kicked into overdrive this coming March. Little has been said about the series, but Marvel has announced that we’ll see Ghost Rider appearing in other books following the character’s return to comics.

  • Rad! – Silver Surfer

This new Silver Surfer book, featuring a story by Spider-Man writer Dan Slott and rad art by Mike Allred, will take the character back out into the cosmos, but not as a lone ranger – he’ll be getting a girlfriend. According to Slott, she’ll be a “cute earth girl,” who will hop onboard with the Surfer in his comic adventures.

  • Sinners – Thunderbolts

This teaser for Thunderbolts isn’t hinting at a rebooted series but rather an added character. Ghost Rider will be joining the team in All-New Marvel Now.

  • The End – Superior Spider-Man

This teaser hints at the newest arc of Superior Spider-Man, but it remains pretty vague in nature. Obviously it’s the end of something – whether it be Ock’s run as Spidey or the Goblin King’s reign or, perhaps, something entirely more unexpected.

  • Trial – All-New X-Men

“The Trial of Jean Grey” is the newest run of All-New X-Men, following the Battle of the Atom event. This is the one that’s crossing over with Guardians of the Galaxy and which will feature, you guessed it, the trial of Jean Grey.

  • Trust – Loki: Agent of Asgard

Can one ever really trust the Asgardian trickster god, Loki? According to this teaser, we’d better learn – and fast!

  • War – New Warriors

The New Warriors are infamous for being the catalysts of the Marvel Civil War, but now a new group of young heroes is ready to take on the team title. The new New Warriors will feature such diverse characters as Justice, Speedball, Nova, Sun Girl, Scarlet Spider, and more.

  • Wrath – Savage Wolverine

This teaser is referring to the newest arc of Savage Wolverine, which will be set in Logan’s past – the 1930s.

2. Other title announcements

Marvel announced several other titles at NYCC as well, ones that didn’t come with a unique, little tagline. One of these, Inhumanity, is the newest Marvel event, following up from the current Infinity event. Also with the Inhumanity event will come another new book, Inhuman, which will follow a new group of Inhumans in the discovery of their powers. Also, on a somewhat different note, Marvel is bringing back the Invaders with All-New Invaders! Based on preview art, the team will consist of Captain America, Winter Soldier, Namor, and a human torch (though it’s not likely to be the original Human Torch, seeing as he’s otherwise occupied); Marvel announced that they’ve got plans for Toro, the original Human Torch’s WWII sidekick, so we speculate that we might see him inherit the mantle.

In addition, Marvel announced the return of Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman’s classic MiracleMan!

3. Movie news

Marvel Cinematic Universe news was few and far between, if there was any at all, which was surprising since three Marvel films are currently slated for the upcoming year:

  • Thor: The Dark World – November 8, 2013
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier – April 4, 2014
  • Guardians of the Galaxy – August 1, 2014

DC Comics

Unlike Marvel, DC Comics chose to save its new series announcements for its solicitations; however, they released plenty noteworthy announcements in their panels at NYCC.

1. Batman

A new Batman series was announced at NYCC – Batman Eternal, which will launch in spring 2014 with weekly issues. This series is set to arrive just in time for Batman’s 75th anniversary. (Wow, Bruce Wayne looks pretty good for being so old; don’t you agree?) DC also announced the return of a pretty popular character in the upcoming series; fans will see Stephanie Brown come back into comics, making her debut in the New 52.

2. Tiny Titans

Although the creators of the adorable Eisner-award-winning Tiny Titans series moved on to similar series such as Dark Horse’s Itty Bitty Hellboy, they announced at NYCC that they will be returning to continue their work on Tiny Titans.

3. Superboy

I’m going to apologize in advance to all of the Superboy fans out there. You are not going to like this news. DC announced at NYCC that – spoiler alert! – Superboy will die. Connor Kent’s death will occur in Superman’s Krypton Returns arc.

4. Justice League

The Justice League is missing, and the DC Universe is “Forever Evil.” The circumstances lead to the formation of a new team: Justice League of Canada, and DC promises us that we’ll get to see some “justice dispensed, Canadian style.”

Miscellaneous

1. Dark Horse Comics

Dark Horse made the exciting announcement this past weekend that several big sci-fi fandoms will get comic relaunches: Serenity (based on Joss Whedon’s fan-favorite show, Firefly), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which will launch its tenth season), and Alien, which will get four comics – Alien, Predator, Alien vs. Predator, and a spin-off series from 2012 blockbuster, Prometheus.

2. Archie

Archie is one of the great classic comics, known for its doofy protagonist, Archie, and his two lovely lady-friends, Betty and Veronica. Well, the publisher announced a new arc at NYCC that might have a widespread impact on Riverdale: “Farewell, Betty and Veronica.” The publisher also teased the introduction of two new love-interests to replace Betty and Veronica.

3. The Walking Dead, season 4

In its fourth season, The Walking Dead was easily one of the fandom with the most fervor at NYCC. Several hundred people stood in line for more than three whole hours to get into the show’s panel at the Mainstage on Saturday night. Lucky for those who managed to get in, the show’s producers and cast announced some interesting information about the upcoming fourth season, which aired its first episode on Sunday night, including the addition of two new characters – Abraham, who will be played by Michael Cudlitz, and Eugene, who will be played by Josh McDermitt.

Of course, more announcements were made at NYCC this year than a person could possibly fit into a Her Campus WPUNJ news piece, so if you’re looking to know more,it’s up to you to do the sleuthing. As of now, “Nerd Word” is signing off for October.

Live long and prosper, fellow nerd-folk!
