Costume Ideas for Every Halloween Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Autumn is the perfect season. A day could be wasted listing all the things to love about it — the colors and amazing, all your favorite TV shows are back, you have a legitimate reason to wear your favorite boots, and…seasonal drinks! Not to mention football, pumpkin flavored everything, and last but not certainly not least, Halloween!

But Mean Girls had it right. Somewhere along the way, Halloween turned into…a different kind of monster.

So whether you dread it or you love it, take some costume advice and live it up!

1. The Frat House/Rave Party Costume

This Halloween, you’re determined to turn up, and (maybe) snag a hottie along the way. Your options are slim.

  • Can’t have too much make up, you don’t want to sweat it off.
  • Can’t be to heavy because…sweat.
  • Still need to put your own spin on something comfortable.
  • Anything with wings is an automatic no.

Also… you’re thinking it but Ja’mie is saying it…

This is the best time to use that favorite pair of shorts you loved all summer, with no judgement — not that you care about that anyway! The worst part of halloween is spending all that money on a one-night costume, (you never get caught repeating costumes) and spilling something on it at a party like this.

So this year — don’t break the bank for Halloween. There’s no better place to look for costume inspo than your own closet. Use your favorite flannel and some boots to be a cowgirl, or add a jean shirt and bandana for Rosie the Riveter. The possibilities are endless with a little imagination, Google, and Michael’s coupons!

2. The Contest Costume

You’ve waited all year for Halloween. Your cup runneth over with body paint and false lashes. You can’t remember a time where you weren’t saving up for makeup. MadeYewLook is the only youtube channel worth watching. Your brush collection is only rivaled by your fabric one. You live for Halloween.

If you look in the dictionary under dress to impress, you can find yourself there! There are no limits to what you’re capable of.

So this year, pull out all the stops. This isn’t the time for subtle pop culture references or the classic black cat. Your ideas are downright ingenious and deserved to shared. Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, Marie Antoinette, and a Na’Vi are all right up your alley. Besides, who wants to tone it down when there’s prize money on the line? Okay maybe its prize candy, but you still beat out all the black cats in the room. Speaking of which…

3. The Classic

Simple, sweet, sexy, and perfect for wherever you’re going — the little black cat costume. You love Halloween, but it snuck up on you after midterms.

You haven’t got time to get elaborate, and you’ve got the perfect LBD just hanging there…

Hey, we’re not judging! We understand! But one of the best things about the cat is that you can dress it up with makeup. You can score cat ears and a tail, and hit up the drug store and take it from cat to straight up safari with some eyeshadow. (Here are some tutorials for some “catty” Halloween makeup: Beginner, Intermediate, and Seriously Advanced)

Cat not for you? How about a “Cereal Killer?” Grab a cereal box and a plastic knife and some fake blood. Or how about Life? Write the word life on a plain white shirt and hand out lemons to random people. For the Classic, simplicity is key!

4. The Gore Master

Remember when Cady went to the Halloween party dressed as an ex-wife in Mean Girls? Did your heart sing and fly when you saw her creative use of fake blood and rubber teeth? Did your stomach fall out your butt when you realized that she was the only one to dress like that for Halloween? (We had such high expectations for Janis!)

This one’s for you.

If you get a kick out of those B-horror movies, but you’re in the mood to scare some innocents, then whip out our fake blood and prosthetic wound makeup! A rubber knife and a cereal box is not enough for you.

You thought there were no limits to the contest costume, but with your style, you don’t even have to stay in the lines.

Have you ever seen a clean zombie? No? I didn’t think so.

(We’ll make an exception for R from Warm Bodies.)

5. The 1%.

No, not that 1% — you’re the 1% that wants absolutely nothing to do with Halloween. Maybe you have a squash allergy. Perhaps the sight of blood, real or otherwise, does upsetting things to your stomach, or you might not even acknowledge it as a holiday for whatever reason. You can think of better things to do than walk around in an outfit that makes no sense. Like stay warm inside and order pizza!

We understand, and we applaud you! Perhaps your All Hallows’ Eve is better spent with close friends or your partner. Don’t worry! We still got you covered.

Literally, we got you covered.

The best costume for staying in is a beautiful Snuggie. Tacky? Maybe. But it’s definitely effective and comfortable.

In all seriousness, why not put on your favorite sweats and try some fund baking and hot chocolate recipes? There are tons of youtube channels dedicated to aiding you in this process. Channel all your creative energy into something other than a costume.

Here are 16 hot chocolate recipes guaranteed to warm you right up, and here’s Rosanna Pansino’s baking channel. Attempting any one of these recipes will keep you occupied for the entire night, easily.

Have a happy and safe Halloween from HerCampus WPUNJ!
