Celebrities Contributing to Global Warming

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Multiple celebrities were called out this year for the overuse of their private jets. Taylor Swift and Kylie Jenner are some of many celebrities who are being exposed for their private jet usage, becoming contributing factors to global warming.

Global warming is an unusual increase in the Earth’s surface temperature which has occurred over the past century due to greenhouse gases that are released from fossil fuels. Kylie Jenner received backlash after being exposed for her 17-minute flights, some even calling her a “climate criminal”. Jenner’s shortest flight is reportedly only 3 minutes. Taylor Swift’s private jet reportedly totaled 170 flights in 2022 alone. According to an article from Vulture, “The total emissions of the year came to about 8,293.54 tonnes, “or 1,184.8 times more than the average person’s total annual emissions.”

One of Swift’s team representatives made a statement to Buzzfeed News that her private jet is “loaned out regularly” to individuals. The fact of the matter is, regardless of who may have been taking the private jet out for a joy ride, or just a short trip down the road, these individuals have created irreversible damage to the environment.

Other celebrities that received bad rep on their private jet usage include Jay-Z, Blake Shelton, Floyd Mayweather and more.
