7 Things Black Women Are Tired of Hearing About Their Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Black hair- A beautiful, versatile and unique hair texture that should be appreciated by both black and non-black races. Letting your natural hair flow in the wind is becoming more popular today. Multiple black women are dumping relaxers, perms, and heat to embrace their curls, coils, braids or locs. The natural hair movement is sweeping this country by storm. Unfortunately, people are unhappy with black women finally appreciating their hair and breaking away from the european beauty standard that straight lighter hair is more beautiful. Everyday is a struggle when people have the nerve to stop on the street or in a hall and say a rude comment about your hair. Just be nice and under any circumstance don’t utter these comments.

1. Is that a weave?” Yes The natural hair that I have grown out of my head since I was born is a weave. Thank you for that observation.

2. “You need to tame your hair!” or “When are you going to comb that?” You need to mind your own business and worry about your edges.

3. “Why not get a perm or go back to straightening?” “It’s easier to manage”. Because I don’t want to. It’s my hair care vs your unwanted opinion and I choose healthy hair.

4. “It looks like a bird’s nest”. or “It looks like sheep’s wool”.

5. “Can I touch it?” I will never understand why people feel the need to touch my hair as if I’m an animal in a petting zoo. Hello, I’m a human being and I feel really uncomfortable with you running your hands through my hair while comparing it to every course object you have touched.

6. “Oh my gosh! how do you get your hair like that?” I don’t know maybe I was born with it.

7. “Oh you’re going natural. It must be hard times for you” Apparently, going natural means that you’re broke. Do you know how much Shea Moisture products cost? I only became broke after buying coconut oil, avocados, shea butter and other hair solutions.
