Simple Nail Trick: Just Add Water

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

Tired of the regular single-color coat on your nails?  Paying too much for a manicure that doesn’t meet your desire for trendy, edgy nails? Here is an astonishingly simple technique to make your nails stand out and impress; and all you have to do is add water.

Step 1:  Gather your materials.

  1. 1 Cup of Water–   It should be deep enough to put your finger in (for poor college students, cutting a water bottle in half will do the trick).
  2. 2 Different Color Nail Polishes – Choose whatever colors your heart desires.  To give the nails an edge to them, you may choose contrasting colors (ie: black & white, blue & yellow, red & silver, etc).
  3. 1 Toothpick– For those with little cash to spare, a rolled up stick of paper will do just fine.
  4. 1 Napkin or Tissue—This will catch the extra nail polish on your finger…. or any on the floor.
  5. 1 Bottle of Nail Polish Remover
  6. *For those who would like to have longer & lasting polish designs*  1 Base Coat & 1 Top Coat

Step 2:  Mix the Polish & Swirl
Once you’ve selected the two polishes, add a couple drops from each bottle into the cup of water (3 or 4 drops should be just dandy). Then take the toothpick (or rolled up piece of paper), and slowly swirl the two colors in the water.  Create as many swirls or other circular patterns you see fit.

Step 3: Dipping Time
Once you’re done designing the pattern, place the toothpick (or piece of paper) down, and stick your finger under the paint.  Select a portion of the pattern that you’d like your nail to have, and lift your nail up and out of the water.  The design will then stick to your nail.

Step 4: Clean & Remove
With your finger out of the water and the extra polish perhaps sticking to your skin, use the napkin or tissue to wipe your skin clean.  To completely clean off your skin, dot the napkin with the nail polish remover.  It will leave no residue behind—except for the lovely design on your nail.

Step 5: Repeat 9x.
Simply follow the same process for the rest of your nails.  Add more drops of polis, and swirl with the toothpick/piece of paper as you see fit.

Step 6:  Extra step to make it LAST longer.
*Before dipping your finger into the water, apply the Base Coat to each nail.  This will save time and quicken the process. After dipping each finger into your personalized & edgy polish designs, let your nails dry, and finally, apply the Top Coat. It will make your nail-art last longer and shine!

Remember, if your designs are not what you pictured, don’t give up!  You will improve with practice.  All great creations require imagination, patience, and determination.
