5 Ways to Style Your Rain Boots

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

If there’s one thing that’s consistent about Williamsburg weather, it’s that when it rains, it pours. Rain boots are an essential wardrobe staple for any girl who wants to stay warm and dry. But style shouldn’t be sacrificed for comfort—here are five easy ways to style your rain boots so you’re cute and comfortable.

1. Wear them with a dress or skirt

You don’t always have to wear your boots with pants—a skirt or dress can make a nice change. Try one with an interesting pattern to contrast from your rain boots (if they’re a solid color), or try a bright color if you have patterned boots. Not only has your rainy day style been easily elevated, but this might also help you look more professional for work or for a casual interview, while still staying dry in the rain afterwards.

2. Use them as a pop of color

If you haven’t already bought your rain boots, look for them in a bright color, so that when you wear them you don’t feel as dreary and dark as a rainy day. This can add some color or excitement, even to an outfit you just threw on without much effort. Black leggings that are perfect for a lazy, rainy day can look super cute with some bright pink boots.

3. Upgrade your boots with some DIYs

If you’ve already bought some plain rain boots, there are tons of DIYs you can do to make them more colorful. You can draw on them (as seen here and here), or you can spray paint your boots a different color (as seen here and here). If you’re feeling really crafty, here’s a tutorial on how to add bows to your boots!

4. Don’t be afraid to layer!

Just as chunky sweaters do, rain boots have tons of potential for layering. Lots of rain boots have fleece liners attached, but you can also buy separate ones. They peek outside the tops of your boots and can add a new pattern or color to your look. If you don’t want to spend the extra money, you don’t have to—legwarmers or tall socks look just as cute and can still provide a pop of color.

5. When in doubt, go with a classic look

Wearing a neutral trench coat with rain boots is a timeless and classic look. For the right fit, look for a trench coat that hits at right about the knee and with sleeves that come to a little below your wrists. Forever 21 has plenty of coats available on a collegiette’s budget.
